Hello everyone! I am new to the forum, but not new to JW indoctrination. Even as a child, I would ask myself, "Why would the Almighty creator need to prove anything to anyone, including him/her/itself?" Really, one of the few scriptures that I do actually agree with is that 'god is love.' Okay, so follow me, please, and let me know what you think: God=love, God=perfection, God=all knowing and powerful If all of the above is true, which WTS will agree with, then, how can God have an ego? Ego is something that the realm of the physical needs in order to keep itself alive. Then how could someone/thing that is completely made of love and is free of ego NEED anything? Can this entity be harmed? Certainly, it (he/she) would not pridefully need to assert Universal Sovereignty, would it? It is my understanding that you cannot harm love. Love needs nothing in return. If that is what the human experience is about, why do we need to be in utter terror of the supposed source of love? Thank you for letting me vent, and blessings to all.
Did anyone really buy into the "Universal Sovereignty" issue?

Something to think about. Welcome to the board!!

I continually bring this up to Witnesses I know. The answer is always that the "Universal Sovereignty" issue is being settled because of all of the spirit creatures, the angels.

Well you were smart enough to catch that. I fell for it.

Next to their 1914 dogma, the Universal Soveriengty issue is the biggest pile of bull$hit thought up by those loons to make them feel more important than anyone else. It's just another ploy to make them feel that they're the only ones on the correct side of a big cosmic fight in the Universe.
If this all powerful, all knowing, omniscient JW sock-puppet being is so vain that his ego is bruised such that it requires a few millenia of extreme suffering from his creation to make it better, he's the biggest SOB if there ever was one.

Up until around 1986 there was no universal sovereignty doctrine as we know it today. It was all about "vindication of Jehovah's name."
***
w95 5/15 p. 25 par. 17 Part 2—Flashes of Light—Great and Small ***Similarly, for a long time, Witnesses spoke of the vindication of Jehovah’s name. But had Satan called Jehovah’s name into question? For that matter, had any of Satan’s agents done so, as if Jehovah did not have a right to that name? No, not at all. It was not the name of Jehovah that was challenged and that needed to be vindicated. That is why the Watch Tower Society’s recent publications do not speak of Jehovah’s name as being vindicated. They speak of Jehovah’s sovereignty as being vindicated and of his name as being sanctified.

***"Why would the Almighty creator need to prove anything to anyone, including him/her/itself?"***
It's an old psychological trick first used by the Israelites to cow and defeat their enemies. The Israelites couldn't just say to their neighbors, "We want your land, so we're going to take it and destroy your people." That would place them on the moral low ground, and their neighbors would be justifiably angered. But if the Israelites say, "Our god is mightier than yours, and we're going to prove it by taking your land and destroying your people." Now the Israelites have the (seeming) moral high ground, and their neighbors are frightened and confused, perfect for the ensuing aggression and annihilation.
This little trick is also in widespread use today. -

A fantastic post. And no, I never bought into it...as in, I knew that was the reason(because thatis what I was told), but it wasn't a rational reason.
The only personal issue I have is with this part of your post:
Really, one of the few scriptures that I do actually agree with is that 'god is love.'
You can agree with the statement itself that "god is love" but if you read the bible you have to recognize that the god the scripture is speaking of is clearly not the embodiment of love. As a disclaimer, these are just my thoughts on the matter and I consider myself an atheist, though only in the sense of a bible god, and I don't plan on worrying about some other book's gods either. -

Why would the Almighty give a rat's fanny what Satan or the angels thought? And why drag the human race into this big contest to choose sides, like little pawns between two powerful entities? Doesn't make any sense. Is God so insecure, he really cares what anyone thinks? Does he need the validation that he got picked over Satan by the some insignificant humans?
It sounded like God was playing games, but God wouldn't stoop so low to compete with the Devil for the affections of humans, would he, so I was confused over this teaching.

According to the bible, YES!

Anyone want to say it wasn't a question as to who had the bigger d*&k? Explain Job. Explain Satan trying to tempt Jesus. Explain confusing the people's languages. I never liked that story either. Apparently, God was really worried about them getting up to heaven on their big tower!!! WTF? It's a giant insecurity issue.
