Would you feel safe traveling to the Middle East as a tourist?

I've thought about this many times, and as much as I'd love to see Egypt, I think I'd pass on traveling the middle east for now. One could argue, that I could step off the curb and be hit by a car, but that's a risk I'd rather take, dying in my own country. I don't relish the idea of being taken hostage, or being blown up in a market, in some eastern country.

Hopefully one day, the unrest will cease, and I will travel to these beautiful cities....if there's anything left to see of them.

    No, I wouldn't.

I have traveled to Southeast Asia, all over Malaysia, a predominantly Muslim country and had several uncomfortable moments. That was in 1996 and 1997. With the way the world is now, I can't imagine doing it. Even back then, I couldn't go anywhere alone, as a woman, and especially an American woman. It wasn't illegal, just not advisable. The people at my hotel took very good care of me and advised me about my activities. I wanted to walk to a nearby mall one day when I had the day off (I was there on business). The concierge saw me leaving the hotel and followed me out. When I told him where I was going, he called the hotel car for me and had them drop me off and pick me up later.

I can assure all you scaredy cat yanks that it is fine in Egypt. Safe safe safe.

The pyramids could collapse at any moment due to their age, and then you'll have to live the rest of your lives knowing you could've gone to see them but didn't!

Don't waste any more time, book your flight now.

I will not go to any country where I will not feel safe wearing a t-shirt that has "Infidel" written on the front in big letters.

I wouldn't worry about Egypt but I would avoid Israel, Lebanon, and the Gaza strip for the time being. But then there are places in the US I hesitate to go to. Just remember that many countries in Europe and Asia have large Muslim populations.

Egypt is fine, it is quite safe there.

as A girl I would recomment maybe traveling in a group, some egyptian man can be anoying (not degerously, but still)

they are not very anti america in egypt, but maybe you can say you come from somewhere in euopre. They do not know the difference anyway. by the way that is one of the first things you ask....

sometimes I said from israel, to have some fun with them. They are happy, funny, friendly people

There is always the reasoning of "not letting the terrorists win", but there is also the reasoning that having your head slowly and methodically sliced off by some religious nutbag would sour a vacation. Both have to be prayerfully considered.

I personally wouldn't go to Egypt (or any Moslem country) because it has seen quite a lot of violence directed against foreign tourists in recent years. The police are doing their best and most likely nothing will happen but I don't like the idea of worrying about the possibility of another bomb going off. I want to be totally relaxed when on holidays.

And particularly with the Americans and the war in Iraq that doesn't go down well with many Moslems.
