Would you feel safe traveling to the Middle East as a tourist? (page 3)

I would love to take a trip to the Middle East and see the Pyramids of Egypt, Jerusalem and so many other ancient sites. However, I'd be afraid of going there right now as the situation is far too volitile and unstable. And don't forget Egypt is a Muslim country. If I were walking down the street there, it would be impossible to tell if I were a Canadian or an American. And fanatics don't tend to err on the side of caution.

Egypt is relatively safe right now. It's not even on the State Dept list of places recommended to be avoided by Americans.

I just read an article in the October Vanity Fair about tourism and terrorism in Egypt. The Sharm al Sheikh area has been completely separated from the rest of the country in an attempt to keep the tourists safe. Other than the pyramids, you'll have a tough time seeing any other parts of Egypt. I tried to find an online link, but it looks like the story's only available if you buy the magazine.

I think Egypt would be safe.

Personally id avoid Israel like the plague because its full of religious nut jobs backed by hefty amounts of American $$$$$ who love to build walls and bomb people.

Id avoid Turkey cos its full of crappy religious nut job mysogynists (yes it is, cos ive been).

And from now on I think I will avoid any country where you can buy guns along with your groceries or at Walmart (that kinda narrows it down a bit!)

I would have avoided England, but America has stopped bank rolling the IRA now, so were pretty much safer than we ever were in the 70's and 80's. It took the twin towers to fall before they decided funding terrorists was a bit naughty tho.

Everything you do has an element of risk to it. How important is it to you. If you want to make an informed deciscion contact the state department and see what their tourist advisory is.

I'm headed to Israel early next year for three weeks. Probably take a little detour to Turkey as well. Nothing to worry about. Then I used to live in Isreal so know where the rocks are in the stream.

That said, I worked in Iran a few years ago and loved the place. I found the 'man in the street' very hospitable and friendly. Its like anywhere, a few rotten eggs spoil it for the majority. Eyeslice

Hi Hemp lover. I'm afraid I have to correct your comment that it is difficult to travel to any other parts of Egypt other than the pyramids.

That is BS. I have just returned from Egypt and trust me, you can travel to just about anywhere in the country as long as you have the money. It's a big country so travelling around normally involves internal flights. We were bombarded with offers of trips all around Egypt but finances meant we only went to the pyramids.
