John 17:6 "I have manifested thy name unto men which thou gavest me out of the world. thine they were, and thou gavest them me, and they have kept thy word."

    On'-om-ah
    Onoma : A "NAME" ( literally or figuratively ),( authority / character ) -called (sur)name

    what does each belive Jesus is saying here is it that;
    A) he gave them the name of God as in the name YHWH /YahWeh / Jehovah
    B) he gave them the character of God with his example.

I'm not sure but i would think the Jw's use this to show that Jesus in fact revealed the name ( Jehovah ) to the disciples for use. however this would seem to contradict the fact that we dont find the name in the New Testament ( depending on the sourced bible )

YAHWEH is NOT Almighty God, but rather a son of god who received Isreal as an inheritance. Basically El gave his sons certain nations and YAHWEH got Isreal.

Psalm 89:6: For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh, who among the sons of EL is like Yahweh, http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/psa89.pdf
Psalm 18:13: Yahweh also thundered in the heavens, and Elyon uttered his voice. (same as 2 Samuel 22:14)http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/psa18.pdf
Psalm 29:1: Ascribe to Yahweh, O sons of EL, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/psa29.pdf http://scripturetext.com/psalms/29-1.html

    JOHN :

    19
So they said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."

So, who were they worshipping? Obviously YAHWEH is not the Father.

Most importantly the "name" Jesus reveals (v. 6,26) is the very name given to him (v. 11-12). The Revealer is the Revelation (cf. 14:9). We are treading on early Gnostic ground.

    Hi Sinis,
I appreciate your answer but it doesnt really answer the question my friend, i want to know if Jesus named anyone. I'd be interested in your answer as to who is the True God though .

Personally, I think there is an almighty god with a pantheon of sub gods (or is sons) sort of like Sumarian belieifs or even Greek or Roman. Why do Christians find it so out of the question that this is perhaps the way it is? A pantheon of gods was believed for mileniums, only to change sometime within the first century. My belief is that it is far more complex than the bible alludes to.

    sinis,

Gods and their names are not static, they drift along the flow of history just like any concept or word. Yahweh could be one of many sons of El at an early stage (Deuteronomy 32:8f), and the only god (= "God") at a later stage (Isaiah 40--55).

Back to Gnosticism (because I think the Fourth Gospel belongs to an early stage of Christian Gnosticism), it is worth noting that while the "OT God" is consistently viewed as an inferior archon, the name Yhwh (especially in vocalic forms) otoh is often regarded as a revelation of the true supra-divine Origin.

    Sinis,

Do you believe that Jesus was just another son of El, and that it was El who loved the world so much that he gave Jesus to die for us?

    Hi Sinis,
i appreciate your thoughts although i do not necessarily agree with them, after reading this portion of scripture more carefully it seems to cover in 17:10 that all Gods things are Jesus's and vice versa, placing them on an equal plane. which is hard for me to accept as ive never believed in a trinity type scenario

then there is also as Narkissos rightfully pointed out 17:11 " protect them in YOUR name that you have GIVEN ME"
Which again seems to indicate that Jesus has been given/has GODS name.
again pointing to the fact they are literally one and the same.

This is a difficulty for me as i stated i have never believed in a trinity, or is that is whats being stated here.

    God bless you all
