Reading that just makes me want to strap on a string of dynamite and kill a few people in the name of rational thought.
LOL. Point well taken.

Wow, the book sounds good. Honestly. I don't think it was your intent to advertise it, but it sounds interesting.
The link takes you to excerpts from the book, well worth reading.

To be honest Dave I really like the guy and I am looking forward to reading it. But I still believe in God when the chips are down.
Dawkins, like Chomsky, seems to attract polarised opinions.
Like Chomsky very often those who hate him haven't actually read him, merely read OF him.
Those who HAVE read him will note that (for example, at the conclusion of The Ancestors Tale) that he chiefly ridicules the primative, ancient concepts of god that certain believers persist in holding onto. The ones that deny facts and modern science and instead insist that it all happened as imagined by a bronze-age goatherd, without any evidence for it.
He actually sees those literalists as being almost sacriligious in their manic insistance that it had to be THAT way and no other. He is against those who insist that their PERSONAL INTERPRETATION of an ancient manuscript is absolute truth, and sees them as practically limiting the power of god by their slavish devotion to what they think black marks on paper mean.
He is more against those who ignore or trample logic, reason, facts and evidence than he is against god. One can believe in god AND agree with everything that Dawkins writes, you just have to believe in a believable sort of god rather than the silly tribal deity sort of trickster god that approves of genocide and the sexual exploitation of minors.
Of course, if some people want to be on the side of those who ignore or trample logic, reason, facts and evidence please, by all means go ahead. Worship your silly presuppostional tribal demons. See god as you want to see it, rather than as it might be. Go right ahead...
Hi Gyles,
I really think you should go to Amazon, purchase the book and then send in a review. Seriously! I love your take on such matters.
I purchased The Ancestor's Tale on your recommendation and found Dawkin's to be an excellent writer. I've no doubt this latest work will be as equally compelling.
Hope everything is going wonderfully well now that your daughter has joined you!
Ian
Peppermint,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention - I'm getting a copy for Christmas from my lovely wifey!
Why aren't you coming to the Aposta Curry?
Ian
From the Book: God Delusion
Our Western politicians avoid mentioning the R word (religion), and instead characterize their battle as a war against 'terror', as though terror were a kind of spirit or force, with a will and a mind of its own. Or they characterize terrorists as motivated by pure 'evil'. But they are not motivated by evil. However misguided we may think them, they are motivated, like the Christian murderers of abortion doctors, by what they perceive to be righteousness, faithfully pursuing what their religion tells them. They are not psychotic; they are religious idealists who, by their own lights, are rational. They perceive their acts to be good, not because of some warped personal idiosyncrasy, and not because they have been possessed by Satan, but because they have been brought up, from the cradle, to have total and unquestioning faith.
How do we know it is not evil and the plans of Satan? When Satan keeps transforming himself into a light of deception. So that ALL religion is his to control
I don't believe in organized religion myself...However I do believe we were created by an intelligent being.
