Hey, do you all think that a person who really thinks elephants are cute and collects them avidly is a practicer of creature worship or idolatry? My mom is totally into elephants and I know they have cultural and/or religous symbolism in the eastern culture as being for luck. Not that Jws believe in luck. But that is a current and still held belief and commonly known-so should someone turn my mom into the elders or something?

Well, I remember some years ago my daughter's class in elementary school was going to have a pinata, the thing you hang up and whack with a stick so that candy falls out.
I researched the origins of the pinata and found in the WTS literature that the origin had its roots in false religion. It was connected with false religion. The WT was very definite on this. Therefore, I did not let my child participate.
Lo and behold, not too long ago, there was an article in I think the awake that said that people no longer connected the pinata with anything having to do with false religion and painted the use of them as innocent fun. What a shock that was for me after my previous stand on this, how much of an idiot I must have seemed to other people for my stand, and the fun my child missed out on!!
What is the difference between this and birthdays and Christmas? Do you think that everyone who celebrates these days really connects magic or false religion to the celebrations? Do you honestly think they burn a yule log as a tribute to the sun god? Or that they light candles in an effort to ward off evil spirits??
The WT magazine definitely stated that although something was once connected with false religion, if in the minds of people today it is not, that it was O.K. How come it's O.K. sometimes, but other times not??
