When we were first married, my wife took me to St. Croix where she grew up. I fell in love with the island and all its eccentricities.
However one day we went into a local bakery to get a roll or croissant for breakfast. A woman comes out from the back, stops and stares at us with a look of absolute disgust on her face, turns her back and walks back into the back of the store.
I look at Nina wondering what was wrong (was something hanging out of my nose? was my fly open?) and she told me just to be patient that we were the minority now as 90% of the island is black.
Sure enough others come in and were taken before us. Finally the woman looks at us and sneered, "Whatchu want?" We told her, and she threw the rolls into a bag and slammed them down on the counter.
It was an interesting experience. Just for a few minutes I knew what it was like to be treated badly just because my skin color was 'wrong'. I can understand how angry someone can be at the blatant unfairness.
