i remember shortly after the donation arrangement started , they released the watchtower and awake on cd's.

i wanted one and went up to order it, was told my husband would have to order it.. ( i guess a penis is required?)

so he went up to order it and the elder behind the counter took him aside and told him that the cd's were 90 dollars. and they'd order it for him but he wanted him to know what the expected donation was. ( kentucky kingdom hall)

we got one eventually. we were pretty poor and took awhile to come up with 90 dollars. we were generous, we put 100 in the box to cover it. (roll eyes..i coulda used new underwear more)

I do believe that the "donation" arrangement went worldwide in 2000. Can you imagine the poor JWs in Africa and South America, etc., who finally could get the bound volumes, and reference books without have to pay $7 out of a yearly income of $300?

Another factor in reaching more people with the good news has been the simplified literature distribution arrangement. Jehovah has blessed the faith shown by his servants in this matter. The voluntary donation arrangement is explained to people, but no charge is made for the literature. As of January 2000, that arrangement was extended to all lands where it was not already in operation. The Central African Republic branch wrote: "This means that anyone, no matter what his or her financial situation may be, can have the necessary printed material to become a disciple of Christ. This arrangement has been greatly appreciated by both the publishers and the public."

The congregation my parents go to and another congregation had to club together to pay the literature bill for another congregation because the Society, in London, were going to stop their literature deliveries if they did not pay up!

This proves for a fact that the WTBTS is ONLY a business and NOTHING else!

My ass is more divinely inspired than the Watchtower!

It would have been interesting to have called London's bluff and seen if they actually stopped the literature deliveries.

Pubsinger - I agree! It would have been interesting, but I suspect that the 'umbilical cord that leads to eternal life' may well have been cut!

What surprised me was my parents attitude that 'of course the Society have to be paid for the literature or how else can they print more!' They did not seem to understand that charitable organizations do not exist to be 'paid back'!

There's Jesus supposedly 'giving free' information to the wonderful FDS and the FDS is demanding hard currency for the same freely given information!

Sounds a touch crooked to me! But sadly not to the average J dub!

I'm not sure that the WTS would have cut the umbillical cord.

If just ONE bolshie body of elders said "no we're not going to cover the deficit, but we will monitor our order more closely in the future" the WTS would have shortfall but I'm not convinced that they would have had any alternative but to keep supplying literature.

Multiply that by 1000 congs and WTS goes bust.

    I know, I know. I'm dreaming

Pubsinger - It's still totally amazing how the Watchtower has such hold over its slaves that it can get money out of any of them at any time, even to pay someone elses bills!

    Yes it's staggering.

And it only took me 33 years to suss it out

33 years is not bad Pubsinger! It took me 39!

I have to admit to having been one of those 'bad' JWs who rarely put any money in the 'box' towards the literature. I did only make a very occassional financial contribution and my husband refused point blank to fill out the charitable giving 'tax' form.

A elderly JW relative died recently and I was impressed to see that she left not a penny to the Watchtower despite having been a Watchtower slave for all her life. The 1995 'generation change' helped her to see the light when it came to the Watchtower.

Do you know I hardly ever contributed as a JW either.

When I started going to church I had no problem at all with giving because it was easy to see all the stuff it was going towards.

I've found that if a church group asks for money it doesn't send anyone on a guilt trip it just says "This is who we are, this is what we do, this is what we need. Would you like to help?"

And if they offer something and ask for a donation they dont send you a bill!
