The saddest scripture in the Bible

Whether you believe in the Bible of not, do you have a particular scripture that you feel is sad? To me it is located at 1 Samuel 8:7

7 Then Jehovah said to Samuel: “Listen to the voice of the people as respects all that they say to you; for it is not you whom they have rejected, but it is I whom they have rejected from being king over them

To me this is sad, the rejection of God and it wasn't anything that He did or His fault.

The bible has for me never been a book I can attach any emotion to and so I have to say there is nothing which makes me sad about anything I read in it. I suppose this has been a protection but I have always taken the bible with a big pinch of salt.

The pathos of the misunderstood and rejected god is a powerful literary device, used throughout the Bible -- from the prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea) down to the NT (Paul's entreating God in 2 Corinthians, the light which darkness couldn't understand in John, Jesus' lament over Jerusalem in Luke, etc.).

It's interesting that a pathetic story like 1 Samuel raises more numinous fear of disobeying God than human empathy for Saul. A good storyteller has you cry over who he wants.

Perhaps in a modern context Yahweh would be offered psychological counselling and help to work on his communication skills?

That is one thing that gets me about almighty god. He's omniscient? How does he get off acting sad or suprised at being rejected?

I agree with you IP_Sec, he may not get sadden by us but I think He does, but I was saying it is the saddest to ME. Rejection is never easy as this forum is filled with it.

There are many very sad scriptures in the Bible.

Just off the top of my head:

    1. When Cain killed Abel
    2. When Jacobs sons killed all the men of Schechem
    3. When the men killed a concubine after abusing her all night
    4. When Herod had all the baby boys under 2 killed
    5. When David had Bathshebas husband killed
    6. When Jesus cried out during his crucifixion
    7. When the angels let loose hell on the earth and all the people who were stumbled by the
hypocrisy of the witnesses are put to death unfairly.

"To me this is sad, the rejection of God and it wasn't anything that He did or His fault."

Is this the same 'god' that had women and children - even babies killed - just because they weren't Israelites? (My bible knowledge is rusty - so forgive me for not quoting exact scripture and verse)

Sounds like this 'god' fella has a mild case of bi-polar disease...
