Jay, I love that bit. I think everyone--even committed believers in God--should read it if, for no other reason, it might keep 'em honest.

Poll answer: NO x 4
Me: "You're saying Hank's always right because the list says so, the list is right because Hank dictated it, and we know that Hank dictated it because the list says so. That's circular logic, no different than saying 'Hank's right because He says He's right.'"
John: "Now you're getting it! It's so rewarding to see someone come around to Hank's way of thinking."
LMAO! I always love these 2 lines. I have never before encountered a more accurate summation of religious reasoning, and ironically, it applies to every single religious belief system on earth!

underlying fact is that there is no way that all the things in the universe just appeared over time or in one big Bang
This is the assumption that gets so many people in trouble. You can believe this to be the case if you like, but it in no way makes it fact.
I don't think evolution or the Big Bang theory is any more unreasonable than believing an unseen entity made a little clay golem and put his mouth to its nose and breathed into it to make the first man.

1.Do you believe in a personal God who takes interest in you as an individual?
No, no beleif in it. I mean there could be such a diety but he never has gotten in touch with me. And if I started hearing voices speak to me out of nowhere, I don't think that would convince me either. Maybe a big giant hand wrtting in the sky, with this diety claiming his interest in my welfare, no that wouldn't do it either, but if he could arrange all the stars in the Milky Way to spell out my name and a sentence or two about how much he was interested in me, now that might be impressive.
2.Do you believe that the Bible was written by God?O please! If there was a god that wrote the bible he would have to be a real moron, and very insecure, not to mention petty.
3.Do you believe the Bible is error free and is always harmonious?Read answer to #2
4.Why do you believe these things?
For one I had to deprogram myself, and in the process take a more critical look at everything I thought was true due to religious indoctrination from the time I was born.

1.Do you believe in a personal God who takes interest in you as an individual?
Yes. Why? In all honesty, it is probably because I was taught this as far back as I can remember and it became part of the fabric of my life. I cannot speculate as to how things would be different for me if I had been taught otherwise. There are also a variety of reasons why I continued to believe some of what I was taught growing up but not all of it. I feel now that my experiences and explorations and questionings have strengthened rather than weakened my awareness of and relationship with God. I see evidence of God in everything, I feel the presence of God everywhere. And I have experienced God's guidance.
2.Do you believe that the Bible was written by God?First, which Bible or which version(s)? Second, basically no. Why? Too many inconsistencies and impossiblities (see An Athiest's Book of Bible Stories). I do believe that God sent messengers to all peoples throughout all time with divine guidance for them, however, and the Bible we have today includes some of those messages. I also believe the Qur'an is the most recent message and is meant for all mankind rather than for one specific group.
3.Do you believe the Bible is error free and is always harmonious? No. Reading the ones I had, it/they did not appear to be. See above.

1.Do you believe in a personal God who takes interest in you as an individual? -- I belive that if the God of my youth actually did exist, he would be far to wrapped up in himself to take notice of me.. Unless I wasnt praising him enough and then he might scold me for not feeding his vanity.... So.. No I dont believe in any supreme being and I really would even hesitate to use "God" in the way that Einstein did in refering to the nature of the universe, as it brings with it what I consider to be a negative connotation.
2.Do you believe that the Bible was written by God? -- Nuh uh
3.Do you believe the Bible is error free and is always harmonious? -- (edited) No
4.Why do you believe these things? -- The short answer is.. In one of my many attempt to work my self into a zealous frenzy, I made the mistake of actually reading the bible, this book that I professed to base my life on. Much like most professed belivers I really hadnt made the attempt to read it cover to cover. When I did attempt it, I found that the bible simply couldnt be seriously dealt with. Sadly it didnt even take all the way through Genesis to come to this conclusion.
