144000, Where did Russell get his idea, and what do other religions believe

Why were there 12 disciples?! Why 24 Elders?! There seems to be some significance to 12 and the multiples thereof..

I have always had a problem with the 144,000 going to heaven until verse 4. Not sure if anyone said this from the NWT: (not sure what the greek words are for this scripture).
" These are the ones that did not defile themselves with women; in fact, they are virgins. These are the ones that keep following the Lamb no matter where he goes. These were bought from among mankind as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb".
Not sure how this verse could have affected Russell's studies.
