DON'T BUY EPSON PRINTERS!

I think the reason why many people have had good experiences with HP printers is because many of their models have the print heads on the cartridges themselves.

You refill them repeatedly till they're too clogged up. Then you decide whether its a better deal to get another cartridge or pony up for another printer.

P.S. To any Mac users who'd like to attach HP inkjet printers to their Airport BaseStation (which can be a headache to get to work) check out this listing:

About 5 or 6 years ago my mother-in-law and father-in-law bought my wife and I an Epson Stylus 880. It's been functioning flawlessly ever since. The only exception being the time that I found a bunch of my sons small toys loaded into jambing up the works. I print pictures and all of my childrens birthday invitations with it. I couldn't be happier.

I spend the jack and buy the Epson ink also.

Here's to elsewhere finding printer happenies!

Elsewhere, I can't believe you started this thread... I completely and utterly agree with you.

I had always yearned for an Epson, for years they had such a great reputation for the greatest photographic print quality, etc. I finally bought one with a built-in scanner. It was, without a doubt, the most horrific piece of equipment I have ever had the misfortune to attempt to operate.

Yes. The ink cartridges! They are unbelievable. My printer was taken back THREE TIMES for refurbishing, always the same problem. Once I bought new print cartridges from the store and they would NOT PRINT!!! It kept insisting I do a head cleaning and by the time the head cleaning was done, the G#$*d*^n ink was GONE!!! No telling how much money went down the drain in ink alone (you know, I once heard that printer ink is more expensive per ounce than the world's most expensive champagne, well with a little Googling and a bit of math, you will see that it is TRUE!)

I did some homework and got a Konica Minolta factory-refurb color laser printer (the Konica Minoltas lasers get great reviews pretty consistently). I LOVE IT. I am in heaven now... but damn did I go through Epson Hell to get here.

I would go for a laser printer, they are much cheaper now than what they used to be and they work out cheaper in the long term for the cost per print. HP is generally a good make and I always go for that.

While you guys aren't buying Epson printers, remember to stay away from RCA products too. Together we can end the production of crummy products!

Consumer printers especially (dunno about commercial jobbies) are built around the Gillete system; they are interested in the sales of printer cartridges (or razor heads); they'll subsidise the cost of printers (or razor handles) with cartrdige sales. Most low-end printers cost more than they are sold for.

Epson printers have (maybe no all) the print heads built into the printer. Especially if the printer isn't used often, they can clog, and after have that happen to me with an Epson, I crossed them off the list. Other brands have the heads in the cartridges.

I just got a Canon MP something MFD, choosing it over a similarly priced HP because the print cartridges were 3 times as big.
