As a kid was there a particular fictional character that you really wanted to be ? Or have there been fictional characters in books that you admired or loathed or epitomised a particular quality for you? One that springs to mind periodically.

I havent read any Dickens for years but some of his characters, even if sometimes a little deliberately one dimensional were portrayed in such detail that the character and the quality become embroiled. I started thinking about this because of Candidlynuts recent thread in which a poster masquerades as humble just like Dickens "I'm ever so 'umble I am" - Uriah Heep character.

For me Miss Havisham in Great Expectations made a huge and lasting impression both in the book and the film with little Johnny Mills. A woman who was scorned and turned her wrath on all mankind and sought to turn her charge Estella into a hater of men too.

I identified with Zorro when I was a little guy:

I got in lots of trouble because of it.

Something to do with making capes out of bedclothes and climbing on neighbor's roofs.

    Go figure!

Nancy Drew was my favourite too. I was also really into Audrey Hepburn films, esp her character in Breakfast At Tiffanys.

    Dear Miss Crumpet,

A topic that evokes my sheer delight! -

Penelope Keeling, principal character in Rosamunde Pilcher's,
    THE SHELL SEEKERS

She helped a young couple, whom she loved and admired, through the donation of her father Lawrence Stern's newly-become-valuable art work to them. As an artist and art dealer, I endeavour to humbly follow the kindly lead she has given me.

Brother A - I can sympathise - I wanted to be wonder woman.

My diary from when I was 7 reads every other page - "got told off and sent to bed with no wonder woman. I hate dad". What a lovely little girl I was!

Xena - I want you to be Lara Croft too! Just imagine doing those amazing handstands to climb up sheer precipices - you will be the talk of the whole island!!

Free2think - I didn't read Nancy Drew - I was more Enid Blyton and Franklin W Dixon (who wrote the hard boys) and I wanted to be George the tom boy from Famous Five

XJW4EVER - excuse my ignorance but who were these two characters - what are they from?

    Winston Smith, Paul Atreides

FE203Girl - I can just picture you in a tight black leather catsuit!!!

When I was a kid I read a lot of western novels, and liked the thought of blowing away the bad guys. I'm not so picky any more, and less violent, and am willing to broaden my definition of "bad guys" to include subway commuters during the morning rush hour. Head butting anyone who gets in my way would be sufficient.
