War on religion some day?

    Spirit Axal,

Having been on the very uncomfortable receiving end of the EXACT oppossite of what you are talking about while in school, I can safely say that it isn't the Christians (at least in the U.S. midwest) that come out worse for wear in those kinds of discussions. I have had several instructors who just can't keep their faith to themselves. Of course we, as students, are a captive audience. Invitations for home bible discussion, lectures on the instructors christian background, etc happen all to frequently during class.

One incident recently caught my intention. A higher up in the division I am in was conducting an introduction seminar for prospective students and I was assisting. At one point she commented that a particular class would be offered next semester, "Jesus willing". The"Jesus willing" comment was said with the stereotypical upturned head and eyes, with arms raised, palms forward. I had to do a double take to make sure that I had actually seen that. Given the level of professionalism needed to perform work in our field, I was shocked by this outburst.

Since she is my boss, and is very vocal about her beliefs, I don't dare say anything because I would get fired. I can never let her know that I am an atheist if I want to keep my job. Through comments I have overheard, as well as working for her for about a year, I have come to realize that she would rather have a lazy, dishonest, thieving, incompetant worker who claims to be christian - such as my direct supervisor, than to have anyone of any other faith or non-faith - no matter how good of a worker they might be.

Spirit Axal said: Just to give a more detail on it "Hey do you believe in god?" "No, i dont want to talk about that crap" then the person says, "Did you know if God is God he could stop you from falling but he wont" So its not fair for me, but its fair for them to start bashing when all i asked if they believed in God and didnt wanna hear it from me yet they wanted me to hear what they had to say, only it was bashing

I don't feel sorry for the religious when they bring up their non-sense and want to talk about it with everybody and anybody. And then get mad when others won't share in their delusions.

In other words, if you insist that the Earth is flat, and if you insist on bugging other people about it, you don't have the right to be mad when they say, "Dude, the Earth sooo isn't flat".

Religion changes. But, very slowly. It is an anchor that conserves the basic good of society. Unfortunately, it also keeps some bad stuff around a little longer than necessary. In mythology there was Epimetheus (looking backward) and Prometheus (looking forward) You need them both. Too often Epimetheans and Proemtheans think they are enemies of each other. When they get to fighting the wasters move in and cause serious damage.

Is religion a problem or a threat? Not IMO but fundamentalism is.

Would a war on religion eliminate fundamentalism and fanatiscism? Certainly not (war is never a solution), it may even foster more fundamentalism. Knowledge and education are the only weapons against religious fanatiscism.

No. If there is basic good in society then it is an intrinsic quality of society.

Religion serves to control superstitious people, thus the Galilei was sentenced to prison and later house arrest.

Why would you want deities, demons, angels, devils, and other mythological creatures and stories taught in a science class?

Please show me where I suggested anything of the sort.

Deputy, I do not mean to be offensive, but why limit God to the little character in the Bible? Why not expand him that he include evolution and science. Why subtract rather than augment?

Did you actually read what I said? I never mentioned "deities, demons, angels, devils, and other mythological creatures" or the bible at all. My problem is not with the science, it's with the Philosophy taught with the science. Philosophy is where faith and science come together. The problem is most people can't tell them apart.

"Religion changes. But, very slowly. It is an anchor that conserves the basic good of society."

Yes, it certainly is an "anchor".....one that is tied around the neck of a culture, dragging it down into the murky black water of superstition whilst simultaneously impeding progress.

Did you actually read what I said?

Sorry, my mistake. I must have got lost in my mind's stories and drama there for a moment and extended your words way out beyond their meaning.
