The US is a capitalist nation, not a Christian nation. Most people in the country do not take religion seriously like how they do in other places like Mexico, Peru, or India.

BA- how much of a religious reason do you see? Any? None?

I know that the US calls itself a "Christian nation" but is religious difference at all a bit of the reason there is all this unrest and war between the Western world and the Middle East??

CCR you really need to get past the media fed cool aid...

K - let me ask you this, "How would you feel tomorrow if Chinese para-troopers were landing and infesting your neighborhood and decided to set up a new, improved government?" Probably pretty upset. You would also fight back. These are all normal responses. Religion is just the smoke and mirrors being used to fuel moslem hatred, it is also the same dog and poney show used to fuel our Christian hatred/persistance/dominance.

The Muslim Clerics (AKA as local warlords and tribal chieftains) are using the guise of religion to recruit young men, impoverished, etc., to fight for the clerics cause in the name of allah. They also hate us because we back Israel and they hate Israel.

    All,

Would you all say that religion is merely the *vehicle* that the middle east used to organize its masses instead of actually wanting us to be destroyed because they genuinely believe we have the wrong spiritual path?

    -K

I believe it is a "vehicle" used to indoctinate the fundamentalist Jihadis to be inspired to fight the West in order to get out of the desert and into the afterlife reward of the "72 Virgins", or was it "72 Virgils"?

The religious hatred on this war is totally one sided. If there was religious hatred of Muslims in this war, you'd see anti-muslim sentiment commonplace in even the most middle of the road Christian churches in the USA. As is, even the extreme ones can differentiate between the Muslim extremists that have taken Islam as their vehicle to cause violence and Islam itself.

In mosques even in the United States there is much Anti-Christian sentiment in the mosques.

Why do the jihadists believe that the US is the "Great Satan"?

I can see why countries where we go in and strip their resources and leave them in poverty (like some S American countries that suffer from for example, Texaco oil extraction and no local enviro regulations- this could legitimately piss them off at the US, as our companies profit from their misery)- but do we do anything like that to them???

Again- I am not a politically- savvy so don't jump down my throat if we DO do stuff like that in the mid east- I know that the war has torn their land to sh!t and they are angry about that, but are there any horrible things they are suffering from as a result of US actions?

Or is their anger because we do not share the same moral code as they do? Because our women walk around uncovered?? I don't think that the average US-hatin jihadist gives a rat's ass what US women do. They seem to be mad because???

What are the *specific* reasons they (average citizens) hate us and that we are the "Great Satan"???

The religious fervor of the Islamist terrorists is simply an effective vehicle to accomplish political and materialistic aspirations. Yes it is about oil for much of our leaders, but it is more about control of society amongst factions that are alligned on historical divisions, not all of which were based on religion.

I believe the Middle East is a brewing cauldron of poor, young, ignorant, backwards, easy to unite against a scapegoat, fundamentalists.

To a crafty Mullah or other religious leader, they are putty in the hands.

To a would-be terror Mastermind, the Mullahs are the key to mind control of these minions of would-be Jihadis.

And, unfortuantely, the Muslim religious leaders rarely condemn fomenting of Jihad against the "infidels" (the West)..

It's in the Koran, after all..

Here is one view, but you'll have to read the whole article to get the full sense of it. I think it covers both questions.

And here is a contrasting view:

I believe the Iraq War is for numerous reasons:

    -Depose a hostile Dictator (Saddam)

-Keep jihadis busy fighting the West over there instead of over here.

-Pave the way for US Military bases in the Middle East.

-Indirectly control the Iraqi Oil, and who benefits from it.

-Uphold the value of the US Dollar.

BA- Of course, I could be wrong, but I'm not

It's about the oil and the setting up of military bases by the US to control the flow of the oil. Everything else is more a result of US policy in the Middle East.
