I think the war on terror is about the radical Islamists that are active in europe and asia . The war in Iraq probly about the control of oil , also they felt would give them a foot in the mideast and they could defend Israel if need be. There are religious under tones being the radical Islamists have sworn to destroy Israel and try and bring the west down.

Your mother's analysis is a very naive one and the FDS is always exploiting such naivity. Wars between religions have been going on since times immemorial, eg the Moslems attempted twice to conquer Europe first the Arabs and later the Turks, and the Christians had a go at the Moslems with the Crusaders. What the dubs were talking about for half a century was the destruction of ALL religions by the UN or the communists which never happened.

I believe the Middle East is a brewing cauldron of poor, young, ignorant, backwards, easy to unite against a scapegoat, fundamentalists. To a crafty Mullah or other religious leader, they are putty in the hands. To a would-be terror Mastermind, the Mullahs are the key to mind control of these minions of would-be Jihadis. And, unfortuantely, the Muslim religious leaders rarely condemn fomenting of Jihad against the "infidels" (the West)..It's in the Koran, after all..
Bingo. But this is what happens when you've got fundamentalist wackos in charge of not only their religion, but the country too. While I think the religion of Islam is completely whacked, if you look at their history, they were far more progressive and prosperous when they didn't have a fundy nutcase running the show. During the Middle Ages, they actually contributed alot to culture, the arts, science, engineering, etc. It's only been really since the late 1800s when they started putting all their emphasis on the religion, and to hell with everything else. And we can see the results.
Even so, I don't believe the War in Iraq has anything to do with religion. There's oil in them thar hills and George Dubya and his cronies have made an absolute killing---in more ways that one.

Kudra,
I am no expert. The Us policy in the Middle East is a very selfish one. They don't care who they sell arms to as long as they make a profit. They would actually not care about the Middle East at all if there was no oil. Oil is something the US doesn't have much of, but uses a tremendous amount. Any threat to the US oil supply is a threat to US national security. Therefore, they attack a weak country in the Middle East to get control of their oil and set up military bases around the area to protect the interests of the US.
The US has armed some of the very ones they are now fighting. The Taliban is an example. Now they are our enemies. After a while, anyone could see what is really important to the US. This has alienated the people of the Middle East from the US and produced the rage we see today called terrorism.
This is just my observations. I suggest you look up some of Merry's links to get a sense of what is really happening.

Their war is about religion.....over 1000 years of fighting.....which we cannot settle, .....our war was over oil,......its has become a big boiling pot and no one can figure out where one begins and the other ends. The U.S. turned up the heat and picked up a big spoon stirring up scum from the bottom.
So here we are with no answers and a boiling pot of stew and no one knows how to turn off the heat or how to skim the scum off the top.
