Horror of horrors.....

"JW - the org behind the name" (Riefenstahl-ish, only better), still is pretty scary. I recently couldn't avoid seeing parts of it. Yuk!

But now for a serious answer.

'After the truth' ( http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119167 ) is scary.

'Funny Games' ( http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119167 ) even more. The latter has almost no explicit scenes at all, you're supposed to fill in the blanks as a viewer.

I have NEVER ever, even before I became a JW, been able to watch scary demonic movies! They just totally freak me out...I have a VERY active imagination and will hear all kinds of stuff around me after one of these movies...don't think I have seen any horror movie past the first few minutes...lol sorry I know this has been no help at all..

Well, just speaking for myself here, mind you, and your mileage may vary, but once I left the JWs I investigated the Bible and other religions. Eventually I decided that the Bible was no inspired, and moved on to the Quran, the Book of Mormon, etc. and found nothing there. Then I examined the issue of God and spirit forces and decided that while I was uncertain as to the reality of God, I knew there were no such things as demons that I could tell. From that moment on, all fear has left me. Totally.

My question is, what movie or movies, since leaving the society, has really scared or upset you? To the point where you feel seriously disturbed? Even a particular scene that really got to you. That made you say to yourself, "This is why it was forbidden."

None. I seem to have the ability to watch anything without being overly disturbed. I have no idea where this comes from, since I am not a hurtful person, or a mean person, in the least. Yet I seem to be able to watch anything horrifying or disturbing and not give it a second thought. I guess because I know it's not real, just fantasy.

Now, real life pain is disturbing to me in the extreme. I hate to see anyone or anything suffer or be in pain. But fantasy is not real life, and movies are fantasy.

the story that scares me the most since being free of JW thinking is not Alien, Body Snatchers, The Fly or Halloween. I saw all of these WHILE a JW and had no difficulty seperating these artful fantasies from the few rare realities of spiritism (as i understood it.) What was to be afraid of? The demons couldnt touch me and i never really believed ALL of the JW demon urban legends anyways. like seeker, my new found skepticism has detached me even further from fictional horror.

the horror i cannot avoid is reality.

this is the story that, as a JW, i was insulated from. nothing in reality could touch me or the world in any significant way. the future was spelled out already and no permanent harm would be allowed to come to anyone undeservedly. but now that assurance is gone. a few idiots with nuclear weapons really COULD blow up the world. the 5000 people in new york actually died and ARENT coming back. if war ensues, more could die suddenly and there is no certainty about how far it might conflagurate, or about what sorts of hideous weapons could be used. someday, i and everyone i love will be dead.

this is what keeps me awake at night now.

I never watched a scary movie on purpose. I think the only one I have watched was that one with Hannibal the cannibal I think Silentlambs, it had Jody Foster in it too, I can't remember the name sorry. Of course I watched that between my fingers over my eyes.

My opinion is why watch something that will taint you? Scary movies will lower your sensations and you will be more accepting of the "gory" Of course a few years ago I stopped watching the evening news, because I always ended up crying over a story on it. Perhaps I am too sensitive, perhaps I care to much.

Fantasy v.s. reality? Nope I think it is all the same if you can imagine it, it can be done. Unless we are talking of the Star ship Enterprise, and I feel that is only a few years away! hehe

In a controversy the instant we feel anger, we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.

    Seven definitely.

I don't know why, but Fallen (with Denzil Washington) gave me the creeps.

    Rex,

What about the stark reality of Blair Witch?

I went to that with great anticipation, thinking I would finally be scared. Nope. Was surprised at how unscary it was for it was, yet again, just fantasy.

Stigmata, especially the scene where she is in the bed and the room is on fire and she is speaking in the voice of the dead priest. Ooooh, I didn't like that. When people are speaking in voices that are not their own, it is really creepy.

Not particularly fond of scary movies, the Prince loves them though. I saw The Silence of the Lambs Wendy. That scared the crap out of me too. Had a fear of basements for awhile. hahaha.

Horror of horrors-Schindler's List. Real evil. Real demons. "Leave you luggage on the platform." A satchel of extracted human teeth, blood stained snow, suffocating in cattle cars and children smiling and waving to their mothers on the way to the gas chamber.

I realize that Schindler is not a horror film but nothing I've ever seen has terrified and disturbed me like that-ever. I've only been able to watch it once since it was released to video. It'll haunt me for the rest of my days. What passes for horror after seeing this seems like a cartoon.
