Horror of horrors.....

    Hmmmm...

Haven't seen many scarey movies in a while. Let's see...

"Stigmata" didn't bother me. "Hannibal" was just gross, not scarey. "What Lies Beneath" had me looking between my fingers at the movie screen, but it didn't leave me with the jitters.

I guess I'll have to go back a few years and say "Amityville Horror". Though it's not very scarey to me now, it scared the CRAP out of me then. I constantly found myself looking out windows at night to see if there were any disembodied eyes floating outside, looking in.

One more vote for Event Horizon. That scene where they unscramble the distress call video gave me the willys.

tdogg, Event Horizon was scary. That scene definitely got to me. Seven, Moxy, I do agree that real life can be much more horrible. Reality is evil. The movie 8MM with Nicholas Cage made me ill. But who's to know what's really behind it?

I have not decided yet what I truly do believe in. I just know that when I see certain scenes in certain movies, I know somewhere deep inside that it can be real. This is what I'm looking for. Movies about the supernatural that made you scared at a deeper level than say, Freddy Kruger.

I remember a movie called "Prince of Darkness". Something about that movie scared me to death. Also scenes in "The Believers", with Martin Sheen. "The Blood on Satan's Claw", "Wicker Man", "The Tempter"(the scene with the goat gave me chills.)The first "Haunting", not the remake. I had nightmares about the wall scene. "Susperia".

Closer, "Fallen" did scare me. Princess, in "Stigmata", the scene where she was writing on the wall, and speaking in another voice, got to me. There's a certain feeling of dread you get, that you don't have in movies like "Silence of the Lambs" or "Hannibal".

I have to say I don't get the idea of "Event Horizon" as a scary movie... I just thought it was an unbelievably bad movie.

Circe and I were talking about this while she was posting and I threw out Alien and Amityville as movies that I found scary at the time I first watched them. Alien was the first rated R movie I think I ever went to. My dad took my brothers and I.

When Circe and I watched Amityville again not so long ago I found it fun to watch but not all that frightening. What gives me the shivers is that it is supposedly based off of a true story and if I let my mind go and accept that as true then BRRRRRRRR...

Circe had one other movie that she found scary and that was "American History X" staring Edward Norton. Incredible film and what makes it so frightening in its own right is the subject matter, that this kind of unreasoning bigotry and hatred shown in this movie actually exists in the world that we live in is truly frightening.

    Hey,

I know this is kinda off topic but a few of the comments made here brought it to mind. The only movie I remember seeing that freaked me out was called "just before dawn" and it was pretty scary to a 17 year old JW lass!

But what's off topic are the films I've seen in the last few years that got to me...they were actual footage films of the concentration camps, the gas chambers, the stacked bodies, etc. from the Holocaust. I took a history class a couple of years ago and my professor showed several of these films...I cried through every one of them. I had probably seen some of these same films in high school but no way did they affect me like this back then!

As Moxy said, I was insulated from reality as a JW...as an EX JW, and especially as a mom, the real horrors that man does to man upset me far more than any imagined horrors. And Seven, I couldn't bring myself to watch Schindler's List; I wanted to, but I knew that it would upset me terribly, especially seeing the children...OMG! the children, I just can't take it.

Hey guys, please. I need more movies. I know some of you have seen at least one movie that disturbed you. Even if some of you don't believe in demons anymore. There was a time when you did, as a witness. I know I'm not the only one who tore up the house looking for "demonic" objects to get rid of. Every jw has a belief in demons. (Well, are SUPPOSED to believe, anyway!)

Seeker, your comments are interesting. I would really like to understand why you don't get scared. Even though I've been out a while, some things really disturb me. Are you positive it can't be real?

: My question is, what movie or movies, since leaving the society, has really scared or upset you?

"Dumb and Dumber" had me so horrified I couldn't sleep for weeks. It is simply terrorizing to know that people like that really DO exist. Consider who dispenses "spiritual food at the proper time" out of Brooklyn, NY, for example.

Thanks for the laugh! I do think a movie about the GB would have me trembling, and puking up my breakfast, though.

    Tatiana,

I remember seeing "The Shining" and it was scary when I was 18. But I've seen it since and didn't find it that frightening. I have never and don't anticipate seeing "The Exorcist" - the trailers were enough to give me heebie-jeebies. "Stigmata" was scary to me because I do believe in evil supernatural beings, but the ending was a total letdown.

If you get the opportunity to see "The Others" it is a pretty good movie. It was made with a Hitchcock scariness to it. No blood, no guts, but certain scenes will make you have absolute chills. There were two scenes where I actually screamed! The ending is pretty good too.

Thanks, Andi. I haven't seen "The Others" yet, but plan to. I actually was looking for movies without all the blood and guts. Like the original "Haunting", with Julie Harris. Something that disturbed you BECAUSE of being a witness.
