Thank you ALL for your replies.

((((((Ross)))))) I appreciate your kind words and tremendous friendship!

Is this anything that we can get involved with?

I honestly don't know how the procedure for becoming a stem cell donor works. There is some kind of national bank (possibly the blood bank as stem cells, in my case, are taken from blood and not foetuses) whereby my stem cell print out would be checked against a potential donor's. If you really want to help - indeed, if anyone wants to help, which I very much appreciate - the best thing to do is make enquiries at one's nearest blood donor bank and ask about how one becomes a stem cell donor.

The procedure to give stem cells is relatively painless - just a needle prick. A needle is inserted in one arm and then one in the other. Your blood continues to circulate but, as it goes through a machine, the stem cells are syphoned off. It takes an hour or so, so take a good book to read.

    Thanks again!!

    (((((((Gary))))))),

So sorry to learn about your wife. Your experience is a warning to all!

    (((((((Diane))))))),

It will be a real pleasure seeing you again!!

    Love,

    Ian

Excellent post Ian, and particularly appropriate in that so many people, and in particular, JWs, seem to fall into the web of medical quackery, practiced by unscrupulous and often unlicensed "Doctors" charging outrageous amounts of money for untested and unproven "treatments".

As somebody actively involved in medical research, this topic resonates strongly with me. Several of my colleagues are cancer cell biologists and some have moved beyond basic research into full-blown clinical trials. My area is neurobiology, not cancer, but knowing and interacting with these scientists gives me a deep appreciation of how lengthy, frustrating and exceedingly difficult it will be to ultimately find a cure for cancer. Incredible progress is being made, treatments are becoming increasingly effective, but we are still a long way from being able to turn off cancer cells and/or preventing these aberrant cellular processes from starting in the first place.

Most of my colleagues in my particular department focus on metastasis, which remains the biggest hurdle in effective treatment. What their research continues to find is that the process takes place on so many different levels within the system (at the cellular, genetic, vascular, lymphatic levels) it is exceedingly difficult to find that "master" switch, especially given the fact that there appears to be a cascade of molecular events taking place (simultaneously!) all leading to the metastatic phenotype. This is the problem: cancer is not a monolithic entity, its an unbelievably complex mosaic of multiple etiological factors. I'm optimistic that, one step at a time, we can defeat this beast, but its going to take a lot more serious research investment on the parts of governments and private charitable organizations.

Some local Witnesses told her about the Hoxsey Treatment

Gary I remember this treatment. Also the apricot pits in Tijuana, Mexico (Laetrile). This was the buzz back then and no one was healed by these alternatives. So many flew to Southern California and hopped the border to the clinic.

Thanks Ian for being brave and posting what you did. I love you Ian and Claire. God you are some fighter.

I know everyone has the best of intentions. Bless them all.

Take care of yourself Ian. So many of our friends here are suffering.

Peace to all of you dear ones.

Dansk - I agree with all that you have said and you have raised some very serious points, mainly that mainstream medicine is making massive strides in the battle against cancer.

However, a positive mental attitude has got to be maintained for a long term hope.

The most important thing, I feel to remember, if a person is labelled 'terminal' is that we are ALL 'terminal' in one way or another, it's just a matter of time. As I have told you before, I have known people labelled as terminal, and one in particular, who had surgery, chemotherapy and was then sent away, to see what would happen, she returned to her doctor clear of all cancer. She then lived a wonderful cancer free ten years.

Remember, should anyone give you a terminal diagnosis, that nothing really has chanaged, We are all 'Terminal'.

I'm not very informed about stem cells Ian, but in what way should the donor not be related? Blood type? relative?

And do they, UK, accept stem cells from other countries?
