I find C. S. Lewis pretty boring, but there was a television movie about the great love of his life, his American wife who died of cancer, which was an incredibly moving story. I watch that whenever it comes up on television, even though it makes me cry. However, I didn't really like the narnia movie, doubt if I'll see the next one. But I'll definitely go see the next Harry Potter movie.

I have only watched the Harry Potter movies, never read the books. I have enjoyed the Chronicles of Narnia since I was a kid. I think that my favorite in the series was the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I bought the big anniversary edition that came out a few years ago that has all the books in one hardcover volume. That said, I never heard any Witness say anything bad about The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Everyone, it seems, was openly against the Harry Potter series. Funny, really, because those same people wouldn't think twice about watching The Wizard of Oz. Oh, I forgot, Dorothy just dreamed it all! LOL!

The next movie is from the least interesting book, so will be interesting to see how the movie turns out.

the least interesting book ? the least interesting book ?????? You're kidding, right ?

The Order of the Phoenix is the best so far. It should make for a very interesting movie.

    Funny story.

At the last Circuit Assembly our CO quoted Lewis' Screwtape Letters. This is a Christian work, make no mistake, but it's a fictional account of a conversation between two demons (!!!) about how to turn people away from Jesus. It was meant to make people realize what kind of behaviors make them vulnerable to falling away from Christ.

But at the end of the day it's still a story about two demons.

And the CO quoted it. At the Circuit Assembly. From the platform.

So flash forward a few months. We are having a shepherding call (that is a whole other story in and of itself which I will tell you someday.) The elder running the thing was pontificating about how horrible entertainment had gotten these days. And he mentions Narnia as an example of how the occult is really taking over the world.

Instantly my daughter, who I'd taken to the movie just the weekend before, says "OOOH I love that movie! It is one of the best movies I've ever seen!"

A couple of moments pass and he says "Really?" And looks at me with this look of horrified surprise.

So I say "Do you know anything about that movie?"

"Well, I've only seen the commercial on TV. I know it is about witches, and magic. And talking animals... It definitely isn't entertainment most Christians would choose."

    Gotcha.

"Did you know the movie was adapted from a book?" He shakes his head no. "The book was written by a man named C.S. Lewis, have you ever heard of him?" "No." "Well he was among other things a Christian apologetic writer. Do you know what a Christian apologetic is?" "No."

At this point I know that I'm being an asshole, but he really got my hackles up saying that in front of my daughter, and I'm angry. So I press on.

After furnishing this elder (he's a janitor, by the way) with the definition of Christian Apology, I say: "So he wrote a lot of pro-Christian books and stories that were designed to illustrate to people various facets of faith and belief. Narnia was specifically written to make the story of Jesus' sacrifice more accessible to young readers. It's basically a retelling of Jesus' story, with the forces of evil, and a noble sacrifice to save a life, and even a rebirth some time later. It even has a final battle of good versus evil at the end. C.S. Lewis was not a demonized writer. Did you notice the CO quoted him at the last Circuit Assembly?"

    "No."

    "Screwtape letters? Wormwood?"

    "No."

"And lastly they make you read Narnia in school so it's hardly a controversial choice of reading material. Didn't you have to read it?" (He's in his late 40's/early 50's.)

"No, " -get this- " I was home schooled."

He let Narnia drop at that point. And moved on to, I dunno, personal study or something. My wife and kids witnessed this whole exchange and I was proud of myself until I realized I had just arrogantly demonstrated my intellectual superiority to a 50 year old janitor that never went to a classroom-style school. :( Then I felt bad.

I wonder if they have let the children watch Disney favorites as

No doubt they won't allow their children to read Shakespeare either. "Macbeth" comes to mind. Anyone remember the three witches who said (amongst other things):

    Double double, toil and trouble
    Fire burn and cauldron bubble

Which phrase was coincidently was used in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".

No doubt the meaning among the Witnesses is that witches are bad only when used in pop culture, eh?

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. -- Macbeth

Celia! You are ... Of The Body!!

I'm a little worried about the movie mainly because the director is so new. But the book was great and filled with lots of clues.

Hey have you seen the new covers for Deathly Hallows?

That reminds me of the time that I bought the White Zombie album La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1 and accidently left it over my JW freinds house. Needless to say his mother found it and freaked out. She destroyed the album and threatened to not allow me in their house any more. She also used this opportunity to speak out regarding her dislike for my Porno for Pyro's T shirt with a devil on it. It took some time for me to earn her trust back.

Here's a pic of the T shirt devil. LOL

Good to see you Darth Yhwh. I can relate to what you said about the album cover, my mother didn't get the prince 1999 cover(well she did get that it had a penis on it.

On to the order of the phoenix. At first I hated this book, on the second read, I loathed it, Than it started to grow on me. I realized that the reason I hated the book so much was because J.K.Rowling, was such a good writer. She succeded in making me absolutly hate one delores jane umbridge. This has got to be the worst character ever. Most story's have the villian you love to hate(kinda like my moniker.) Or you have the villian Thats just delicously cruel and wicked(like a certain he-who-must-not-be-named.) But with Delores Jane Umbridge, my god this witch was just foul, evil and nasty with no redeeming qualities. And for her to be that nasty with her veil of girly sweetness,eewwww.
