No, I'm still waiting to hear the results. This is why donations are so important. If the German donations aren't a match the search will be on to find someone who is. That match could be someone here on JWD. They could literally save my life - or someone else's!! Without a match, I'm dead!
Ian
Good luck Ian
It seems that I am too blooming old to register (sigh!)
Hi BB,
Thanks!
It seems that I am too blooming old to register (sigh!)
It's the thought that counts!! I'm deeply grateful that you even considered it.
Ian
OK,
I'm bringing this back to the top for those who missed it first time round and also for those wanting an update.
One of the German donor's is almost a perfect match for me - 9 out of 10!!!! I'm to start treatment next Monday and know how fortunate I am that such a wonderfully kind person should come forward and donate his/her stem cells to help another human being. I was informed that many people die waiting for a stem cell transplant because a match cannot always be found. Therefore, PLEASE do consider being a stem cell donor.
I am so proud of those of you who have joined the stem cell registry in the UK and elsewhere. You are true life-savers!!
Love,
Ian

I can't donate blood because of health issues. However, my son is in the process of organizing a stem cell / bone marrow drive at his high school, and my daughter will do the same at her university this fall. I suggested it to them because of Dansk's need for a stem cell transplant.
Kudos to everyone who helps save a life!
GGG
Thank you GGG - and many thanks to your son, daughter and their university colleagues!! Love, Ian
It is now 3 months since my stem cell transplant. I had my blood tested a couple of weeks back and it was found that it is 100% my German donor's, which is GREAT news and is earlier than expected
Stem cell transplants are now being used for many different types of cancers and other diseases as well. Without that wonderfully kind German person stepping up to the plate I would likely be dead now or, at the very least, dying. Now, I have a real chance of being completely cured and doing things in life I should have done many years ago, such as travelling and not taking myself too seriously.
I ask again that those who haven't yet done so PLEASE consider being a stem cell donor. Apart from a needle in each arm the procedure is painless. Just think, it could be YOU, YOUR SPOUSE, YOUR PARENT, YOUR BROTHER or SISTER, YOUR FRIEND, YOUR LOVER who next needs a transplant. YOU could be the life-saver of so many. The stem cells are sifted out from one's blood and takes around 3 hours.
I would like to thank the German donor but I can't get to know who he is for around 4 years - and even then only if he is willing. I've got him a thank you card but it has to be sent anonymously via my hospital.
I am profoundly grateful that some people here on JWD actually enrolled to give stem cells after reading this thread.
Love,
Ian
