    "Paydise Oyth!"

    It's pronounced ERF, not Oyth!

Also, my mother is the only one I know who pronounces the word "Jehovah" funny. Jeeeeehovah! But then again, her pronunciation was funny for other stuff:

    Garbage = Garbeeej

Renee (my ex) = Ren Ay (sounded like two words)

Believe it or not, this happened at two different occasions, several years apart. The first time it happened was when the brother was giving his Sunday talk and was the part about Jacob and Esau, and how Esau gave up his birth right for a bowl of red stool.

And the second time it happened was when a brother was giving a comment during the WT study on the same subject and was very emphatic about that same bowl of stool.

yikes, maybe these guys should review in their heads what they’re talking about and how they should say it…

I just remember laughing so hard at both occasions and it still makes me laugh

There was a big thing made about the correct way to pronounce Sanhedrin for a while (apparently the emphasis must be on the first syllable!) and Thessalonica too. (on the third, not fourth!)

Many seem to have trouble with hyperbole and Jesus' (as in possessive) and end up talking about multiples.

I think I've shared this one before.....

A particularly older and very dear brother was closing the service meeting with prayer
and he begged Jehovah "please forgive us for our fallen shorts".

    .....what an organization

I was in one congregation where the accent of some caused them to add an H to some words and remove it from others. Half of the congregation spoke this way. Some examples are:

    • elders = helders
    • have = av
    • ask = hask
    • covetousness = covetchesness
    • Jehovah = Jehover
    • help = elp

That's funny. As part of my high school college credit English lit. course, we watched a documentary about all the different versions of English that people in Britain speak. It's at least as diverse as the English that Americans speak and in many cases, just as difficult to understand and just as "incorrect".

Language lives, people. And it is hubris to think one version of the language is any "better" than another.

edit: I'm not saying we should just be okay with mispronunciation. But I see no reason to down one region or country because some words are pronounced differently in them from how those same words are pronounced in other regions/countries.

I don't think there are 'universal' mispronunciation issues. There are some very 'jw' words that you rarely hear anyone else use. When you hear one it just makes you tense up!

Words like 'materialism' 'pioneer' 'worldly' 'headship' 'paradise' ugggh! It's funny how I heard these words a gazillion times a week for 24ish years of my life and now I can go YEARS and never here them in a normal conversation. Of course when you DO hear someone say one of these words it's like a freakin' ice cicle down your back isn't it!

We did have some people who pronounced things HORRIBLY though. One woman in my old hall always said 'leapers' instead of 'lepers.' One older brother whenever he was reading and came to a word he couldn't pronounce always just said 'wheelbarrow!' As in "David turned to his son... Wheelbarrow, and said all this land will belong to you one day is the utterance of Jehovah just as I promised moses when he was fighting the... Wheelbarrow's..." Etc. It was a real hoot

The scary thing is he was a MS working toward elder I'm sure that he's right now conciling someone on their life their relationships and their future... Scary!
