Take a sheet of paper. On that sheet draw a circle. In the middle of the circle, place a dot. The dot represents you, and the area of the circle represents your knowledge. Some where outside of the circle write a capital letter "G."
Then, take the piece of paper and wipe your arse with it.
The moral of this story is, a shitty analogy can eventually be put to good use.

As human knowledge increases things previously attributed to a God or Gods are explained as natural phenomena. The circle grows bigger and pushes the G further away.
