    Moridin,

Congratulations on such a fine thing you are doing for your country.
I am sorry to hear what is happening within your family, and my heart goes out to you.

It is painful to be shunned, but it is something you eventually come to accept.

Far better to stand and be counted for what you are than be liked for what you are not.....

    Best Wishes and Take Care,
    Ana

    Mordrin,

Congratulations and Welcome to the United States Army! GO AIRBORNE! Where are you doing Basic Training at? I'm stationed at Ft Jackson, SC if you attend here, try to email me your unit, etc and I'll go to your graduation, shake your hand and buy you lunch.

Would it help to remind your mom that you can't be DF'd but that this is considered by the Society to be a DA? Would it help to remind her that you aren't supposed to shun DA's or that even a DF doesn't eliminate family ties? Point out the fact that Cornelius was a Centurion, and that Peter baptized him WITHOUT a requirement to leave military service.

    Again, congrats and WELCOME.

How wonderful for you to show your family that you beleive so stronlgy in freedom that you are willing to risk your life to defend it for others!!
Funny how they are disowning you for something they practice!! If you were going as a missonary to a place that is under "opression" and was risking your life for they things they believed in - I bet they'd be hugging the life out of you! Instead they damn you for standing up for something you beleive in! What hypocrits!

I truely admire your courage and strength to make this decision. Keep true to yourself!

    Wendy,

Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts. I see you're writing from Yemen these days, BE SAFE! Yep, we're all settled in and I'm back at work. Wouldn't you know it, the unit I just left is now deployed for this current operation. I'm missing out. Darn the luck! Oh well, I've had my day in the sun.

    Moridin,

If you haven't done so, I would encourage you to read AGuest's entire post. It is well worth the few minutes it will take.

Funny, my parents are both ex-Marines and Dad is an ex-cop. When people hear that I was raised a JW, I'm quick to defend myself by making an excuse--that my parents have done thier duty for this country.

Believe me, if you want to enlist that will be your source of pride and your defining moment--not growing up in this shitty religion.

Thanks for all the responses it's really encouraging me. Today my mother informed me that she had told all of my relatives of the decision I had made to join the Army. Of course none of them were very happy. My aunt has made the decision to call the elders instead of my mother. My grandfather and mother are trying to get a hold of my recruitor to tell them I have a slight case of asthma to try and get me disqualified. I let her know how upset and disappointed I would be and how I want this more than anything else. I told her that if I really want this bad enough I will be able to overcome any obstacles I might have. I really hope she just leaves it alone. Well I'm off to take my intelligence test for the Army so I'll post again later.

    Modirin,

Don't sweat the asthma deal, if it ain't in your medical history it won't come up. If your recruiter mentions it, just tell him about your JW family opposing your enlistment.
