It was a householders comment that started my research into watchtower doctrine
that eventually resulted in me leaving the org.
I was working with an elder, and this guy accused the wts of constantly changing
doctrine, citing the 1995 generation change as a prime example. The elder claimed
that this particular doctrine hadn't changes at all, just our understanding of it,and the wts
teaching on the generation had, in fact, never changed.
I didn't say anything, but I knew he was wrong, having been taught the "old light" about
the 1914 generation still being around at the end when I was studying in 1991, and the
"new light" on it in 1995 (this incident was in February 1999). I trhought about it for a few
days, then decided to research the history of the org as far back as I could. It didn't
take me too long to realise that the wts had been mistaken many times, like 1914, 1915,
1918, 1925, the resurrection of the ancient worthies, and had then changed their ideas
rather than admit they had been wrong, and it was obvious to me that, rather than being
in the true religion, I was following the teachings of unscrupulous men who would do just
about anything to hold on to their status. Once I knew that, it wasn't long (Nov 1999) before
I stopped attendings meetings, and I have never entered a kingdom hall since then.
My only regret is that I never did go back and thank the guy who made the accusation that
day. It was what he said, and the elders' response to it, that helped me get free of the org.
