Country lyrics are so down to earth, so real, that their power is undeniable. I had always written the stuff off as hokey and uncool, until the last few months. I hit that point where I realized, like you said, Art, the lyrics of our favorite music had become trite. I think most forms of commercial music have intentionally ambiguous lyrics, so that they will appeal to the largest audience, a kind of "interpret it for yourself" quality that lets one tie the lyrics to ones own love life, drug experience, or whatever. With country,there is no ambiguity. The stories are about real life, authentic human experiences lived by people more concerned with living life their way than with an image. This is how I see it now, as one fed up with the music the mainstream feeds us. I been meaning to pick up some older Willie Nelson and Hank CDs. Today is the day.
