The movie Blood diamonds is really good. But a little violent. It exposes the truth about diamonds at the end.

Great points, everyone. I have never wanted nor desired diamonds.

It's not a scam. It's supply and demand. You don't pay as much for emeralds or rubies because they are not as desired and are more plentiful.

People want them and so there is a market and what the market bears is what is paid.

Diamonds and gold have always been desired and never been plentiful.

    imho

Thanks for the responces. Maybe smooth marketing has helped to create a certain mystique about diamonds. They use slogans like diamonds are forever, diamonds are a girl's best friend. But really, no more beautiful than cut glass.

I bought some opals for a few bucks in australia. They are beautiful.

I had a funny experience once with a fake diamond. I have some real diamonds, and a big fake diamond from QVC. I wore that ring and a couple of others to a meeting once with some elected officials - big audience. After one speaker, a woman, left the stage, I followed her to ask a question about something she said. She started to answer me when two men came up and just walked right in front of me as if I didn't exist and started talking with her and she immediately turned to talk to them. Ruuuuuuude!!! Anyway, I decided to play my diamond is bigger than your diamond, so I stood there and played with my diamonds, admiring my big fat (fake) diamond on my big fat hand. Within two minutes they were all silent, watching my diamond instead of talking. so I started up my conversation with her again and they waited their turn. I didn't really do it on purpose, so it was really funny!

I have the traditional diamond wedding ring...small but I prefer it that way cause i use my hands alot and prefer not to have something stupidly big on my finger. My husband got me a beautiful promise ring that I wear on my hand more then my daimond.....its a beautiful Tanzinite. My prefered wedding ring would have been a bigger version of my promise ring. a trillion cut tanzinite.....we stuck with a daimong because I have a busy life and kids and Tanzinite will shatter if hit in the wrong place. So until my kids are grow and I live a more delicate life (hah) its to be a 30th or so wedding anniversary present. ... There are so many beautiful stones to choose from . I think Diamonds are choosen because it is the "norm" it is what wedding rings are made of........but sometimes you need to think for yourself and a little out of the box.

I think the deal with diamonds is like P.T. Barnum said theres a sucker born every minute. Someones got to exploit them.

yes, it's an artificially created shortage so the price remains high. Just the same all those pretty sparkly things are very attractive. However, I think the fake sparklies are just as pretty, depending on the setting, which can give away the kind of stone it is. I like rubies and garnets myself, and sapphires, the colorful ones.

For those that believe having a diamond is murderous, do you folks eat meat? Once you see the butchery that takes place, I bet it doesn't stop you from having a delicious steak.

Diamonds are just a rock, gold is just a metal. It's worth more to me if I have money to feed myself and put petrol in my car and not be in debt!
