In New Hampshire, the Council that has power to make laws happen, voted against the mandatory seat belt law. It appears that seat belt use will remain voluntary. Do you believe the government should require such laws???

I understand that they make children be in a car seat. I do not think it should be the law to wear a seat belt. I believe laws should only be made to protect the freedom of others. Like stealing is wrong because it hurts another person. If I do not wear my seat belt, it is not hurting another person. It is the law in Mississippi that you must wear your seat belt.

I think the government should require that we have a transportation system in this country that doesn't totally suck.

That must make New Hampshire the only state left without a seatbelt law.

If they are successful in making adult seatbelt use voluntary, then let's hope nobody expects the government to bail them out financially when they are crippled in an accident where they were not wearing their seatbelt.

We know that isn't going to happen, though, right? If people expect the government to carry them with disability pensions if they become disabled in a car accident, then I think the government, in an effort to minimize the risk of disability occurring in car accidents, should be able to require people to cooperate in minimizing that risk and comply with seatbelt regulations, otherwise they forfeit their "right" to be compensated by the state.

I don't think so. As George Carlin puts it: I think it cuts down on natural selection.

    In a word...No.

Nor should they regulate helmets for motorcyle riders.

In the state that I live when they first made seat belt usage a law, they said that they would only charge people with not wearing a seat belt if they pulled them over for something else or were involved in an accident. They promised to never make not wearing a seat belt a reason to get pulled over. A few years later and the state started campaigns to ticket people not wearing their seat belts. Now they use not wearing a seat belt as a reason to pull people over and try to get searches of their vehicles.

It's another case of giving up a small freedom for safety just to have it backfire on us in the form of government meddling in our everyday lives.

No other safety innovation in the history of the automobile has saved more lives than seat belts. In addition to that, they are cheap and very unintrusive. Without your seat belt on, the other safety mechanisms in your car do not function properly - for example, an air bag does not help you if you are not in the proper position.

Vehicle accidents cause billions of dollars of cost to society. If you expect society to pick up the pieces of your life in the event of a catastrophe (and everyone does), then the least you can do is cooperate in such a minor way.

Scully, I agree with you too. If we don't wear a seatbelt or helmet, if we do have an accident, we should not get compensated for it. THAT might make people make their own choices without government telling them they have to or else get ticketed and fined. These laws are great revenue for the state.
