Tijkmo, ANYTHING can produce a disruption to create an accident. Changing a radio station, having another person in the car, especially children can get one distracted. Having a pet in the car can cause an accident. Driving while having a cold or hayfever could very easily make one sneeze and take their eyes off the road. Driving if you're tired could make you yawn and get you into an accident. Sipping a coffee or soft drink, eating a donut-----almost anything can contribute to an accident.
Do You Think The GOVERNMENT Should Require You To Wear A Seatbelt?

I believe in the seat belt law here in Illinois, "click it or ticket", and I am not sorry for it...knew too many that lost their lives because they were not wearing a seat belt...

Great point. Its a good driver that pays attention that we need. No law can turn someone into a good driver. What if we all said: Our insurance companies pay for treatment when someone gets an STD. Maybe we should tell someone that if they were stupid enough to have sex outside of marriage, they can pay for the costs themselves. That goes for those who get AIDS too. And the birth of an illigetimate baby. Our insurance companies pay for when someone is playing football and hurts their knee. Maybe they shouldn't cover people who are stupid enough to play football. They can pay for the medical costs themselves if they choose to play such a dangerous sport. This kind of thinking can lead too all sorts of things ... I think it needs to stop here. The more laws we make like this, the more our freedom is limited. And the founding fathers of the US wanted us to be free and we should do what it takes to protect our freedom. And how many times does a unseatbelted driver actually cause the death/injury to another person? Isn't the wreck itsself the danger? Maybe we should outlaw cars and just use public transportation ..... I'm j/k

I am a huge fan of mandatory seat belt wearing, but Undercover makes an excellent point.
I guess my feelings would have to be that violating a traffic law doesn't give the right to
search a vehicle. That's tough to keep from the legislators. They do this one step at a time
as was pointed out."The law already exists. We can enforce seatbelt laws or raise taxes. Let's choose the seatbelt laws."
"The police already have someone pulled over. Only criminals have something to hide. Let's give the
police the right to search the vehicle.""Let's give them the right to take these lawbreaking seatbelt ignoring folks to jail. See how they like it"
"Let's confiscate their car." (Okay, I skipped a bunch of steps. You get the point.)

I think your points should be considered. Actually, if we NEEDED all this legislation, we'd never ever have to even think about making a decision. All decisions would be made for us! And I think that some folks really believe they know what's best for everyone else. Kinda like G.W. Bush.

In Europe seat belts have been compulsory for many years and it is a good idea to use them because they saved many lives, some people say I am a careful driver it will never happen to me but it can happen to anyone even from someone else's fault. It doesn't cost much effort to put on a seat belt.
