The Power of the Question: what most are missing

    Slim,

Usually we are talking three "naratives:"

    Scriptural

    Historic

    Free Will

The JWs are using perversions of the above to control the minds and lives of others.

An individual refuting the JW position in any of the areas above is not out to control the mind of the other: they are simply broadening the ability of tha person to use thier mind with less restrictions.

"Freedom is the obligation to do what we should not the release to do as we want."

Alsi, truth is truth is truth aside from any narrative.

If I state: Oxygen is a part of our atmosphere....just blurt it out.....am I wrong about this just because it is not in a setting?

And, what is the reason you would resist "tools" designed to assist a person having the ability to go one on one with a representatives of a destructive cult?

    Yours,

I completely agree. When I first came out of the org and began to debate with my former 'brothers', I noticed that I knew exactly what they were going to say before they said it. This is because I used to be in their shoes. With that in mind, I could be in complete control of the debate, choosing wisely which questions to ask.

I always find that if you quote a contradictory JW article or statement to a JW, ask them to tell you what they think it is trying to say. This way, the Leopard cannot change it's spots by saying 'well, they do not actually mean that'.

    VW:

Your topic and initial post were explicitly generic (not a criticism, I do think general methodology is a vital issue in the era of "specialism"), so were my replies so far.

Defeending objective truth is not mind control.

How is defending the date 586/7 as the fall of Jeruselem against 607 mind control?

There the discussion has a specific context, history, and in this context the usual scholarly approach and tools are fully valid.

But as soon as you ask, why does that matter? you'll have to find another epistemological "context".

I was starting this thread for those interested in "strengthening" their presentation. Especially with family members.

Of all the methods of presenting evidence to JWs, this seems the strongest to me.

It is not about controlling someone: just the discussion.

I wish I had realized this point five years ago.

I DA'ed myself (I think I was DF'ed, also....) with just a couple of concerns: little hard fact. Most folks, so it seems, spend a lot of time aquiring data which I did not. That data with control and you have strength.

Data apart from strength and you have a weak opinion.

    Gotta go to the hatchery.

Will look at this thread late, late night.

    Yours in this Journey,

We need a list of counter-questions...

You know what would be cool?!

If someone would copy the presentation for the magazines from the back of the KM. And then provide a list of counter-questions for when the dubs show up.

Sort of like Blondie's weekly reviews... except only once a month... and a lot shorter... and a totally different subject... Okay almost nothing like Blondie's weekly reviews. But whatever.

My question for the Dubs that show up at my house generally goes something like this, " Why in the hell are you still standing there when I've got a 12 gauge pointing at your head ? "
