A letter read to the BOE about a year ago gave the elders explicit instructions on what to do in case of an emergency like a hurricane. The main thing I walked away with after that meeting is that Book Study Oveerseers were to collect phone numbers, cell numbers, the names and contact info of relatives of all in the Book Study. He in turn would give this info to the secretary who would compile a master list and give to each elder. The PO would then transmit this list to the CO. In the event of something like Katrina, the Book Study Overseer was instructed to contact each family in his group, ascertain what preperations they had made in advance of the coming event, if any, and then report that to the PO, who would reprot to the CO. They want the cong. to KNOW who is staying, who is leaving, where they will be, whom they will be with, and the ability to get in touch with them. No specific mention of any supplies was made that I can recall except for the observation that any living in an area where they may be subject to such events should keep water and non perishables in sufficient supply to ride out the period between the initial event and the arrival of external aid. The BOE where I was in took it upon themselves to have the BS Overseers make lists of what each family should have on hand and distribute this to their BS members. The thinking was that there was no way an elder could, on the eve of a coming hurricane, make sure all the families in his BS group had supplies on hand and if not get those supplies for them, take care of his job, and take care of his family.

Three weeks after this letter was read to my BOE the secretary asked me for my home number. I told him it was non-published and he couldn't have it. He insisted, quoting from the letter that was read. I thanked him for his concern and told him in no uncertain terms that I was very capable of taking care of my own family and he wasn't getting my number or cell number.

That weekend we went to dinner at the house of a couple we are close to. Their pantry was stocked with guess what? Canned foods, bottled water, candles, first aid kit. (Very out of character for these two.) I asked the wife what that was all about, and she said her husband gave her a lsit of things to get and stock in case of an emergency.

While none of this seemed like a bad idea to me, what I found intolerable was the WTS reach into every crevice of a person's life. They find nothing that is off limits.

I was an elder last year. I don't offer proof of the letter to the BOE, but I confirm that it was read.

    Zack has it right:

A letter read to the BOE about a year ago gave the elders explicit instructions on what to do in case of an emergency like a hurricane. The main thing I walked away with after that meeting is that Book Study Oveerseers were to collect phone numbers, cell numbers, the names and contact info of relatives of all in the Book Study. ...The BOE was to think about what types of disaster occur in their area, and what they should advise the
    publishers to prepare for.
TheKings got it right when she said this was to make the paranoids think about Great tribulation or
Armageddon, but it was also to tell the rank-and-file that the organization did something, advised something,
will be there to help you when something happens.
It minimizes the need that people will have during the aftermath of a disaster, so (IMO) the society can keep more
of the donations given to help out.

It also confirms the necessity to compile local lists of publishers and get their cell phone numbers. Anyone on this
board who is considering vanishing from the borg, change that number and don't give it out. They still have my number
and occasionally call- I screen the calls and don't return them, so now they call from numbers I don't recognize. This is
    a new developement.

Current is an odd word and it's a fair example of why people struggle to learn the United States English. Current is voltage in a power line, currant is a first cousin to a raisin, and current refers to the present time.

Good fruit cake is all fruit and nuts. Cheap fruit cake (like the kind I used to make) is made with some fruit and a few nuts and a lot of candied peel.

I don't want to offend any bakers and I was one for over 11 years because I told my mother I wanted to be in the dough and she told me to get a job in a bakery. After 8 or 9 years I got to thinking that this wasn't what I had in mind.

I did leave with a really good fruitcake formula and the key ingredient was rum. rum rum yum yum!!

I was also an elder at the time the letter was read and Zack & OTWO have it nailed down. Actually, after Katrina, many not for profit type organziations were doing education work at the encouragement of the government on what to do when something like Katrina happens again, which we all know it will.

My take at the time was that the WTS was going to use the letter as perhaps part of its proof to the government that it was doing a charitable type of work. Our secretary went nuts getting the information (I somehow forgot to turn mine in as far as family contacts and the like) and also passed out a list of items he got from the FEMA website on what to do in case of various emergencies. We then circulated the list to the individual members of the book study.

Honestly, I thought this was one of the better things the WTS has done lately. I really think the intent wasn't to necessarily control (in this case) but to make them look better to the IRS. I also have a list of stuff from a few other sources and its probably a good idea for everyone to have some sort of emergency plan.

I do think the whole thing with getting them getting your personal emergency plan was over the top. Suggest it, fine. But, as I told my secretary, I'm a smart enough guy to take care of my family. I didn't need him reviewing my plan.

Whatever happened to their mantra "Trust in Jehovah and do not lean upon your own understanding."?????

I remember back in the 1970's bros and sisters were stockpiling canned goods, etc. Then the WT society came out and said, "This shows lack of faith in Jehovah's ability to provide for his people."

    Now they're saying this??? Can anyone spell C U L T ??
