our local post office is holding an ebay seminar, of all things. I have the feeling that ebay and amazon.com are two of the biggest sources of post office income. I know that the only time I use mail is when I send my ebay or amazon items - I pay bills on line, bank online, etc. so no need for post office. Or paper checks, for that matter.

What would sunday mornings be without the sunday paper in the garden with a tasty breakfast!

Some interesting facts about each ...
Land Line Phone Lines are seeing an average of 20,000 lines lost each day. Now that is not 20,000 disconnecting and 30,0000 connecting. No it is 50,000 disconnection and 30,000 connecting, that is a net loss. People are going to VOIP services, provided by their cable company and cell phones.
Newspapers are now trying to give away their paper product, or giving away free month(s) of subscriptions, to keep their numbers up. Their ad rates are based on the amount of newspapers they sell on average. News papers sent out, to news stands and so on, that are returned ... are not counted. They hope to dodge the bullet that happened to public radio, with satellite radio. Sattelite radio is considered to be a failure. Also, realize the damage the invention of a FAX did, which helped the phone companies, until e-mail and PDF files.
The postal service recently raised the postage stamp to make up for loss of profit from less mailed parcels. They are now trying to reinvent themselves as an alternative to UPS and FedEx, two businesses that are doing well in comparison.
What is odd, is all three played a huge part in history and civilizing our cultures. Yet, their time seems to be done.

I'm a newspaper editor and writer, and trust me, these questions are a daily concern to the people that own the papers I write for. We've developed a considerable web presence, but how to balance the two of those is a challenge. No one has a good anser right now.
I read the NY Times everyday - free, online.
I just did a huge magazine interview with my state's Commissioner of Public Service. We're trying to become the first state with total wireless coverage. It'll be a few years before that happens, for sure, and we're a very small state with only 600,000 population. The Commissioner said it'll be many, many years before the land phone lines are gone. It's no problem in populated areas, but it's a serious issue in rural areas, and with many folks tied still to dialing on land lines.
Postal Service - probably will do more business than ever, thanks to E-Bay, etc.

many years before the land phone lines are gone
I work for a land line company. This is what will happen. Over the next couple years you will see most of them combine under AT&T and they will continue to see loses. More then one will file Bankruptcy protection within this time, too. They will servive in one way or another, but VIOP will be the main reason they fail. Wireless is okay, but most wireless companies have seen that their increase is slowing, as their prices have gone up and up and up. It used to be their main driving factor, that they were not expensive and had free long distance. This is also killing satellite television, as they are no longer the cheap alliterative they used to be, either (Guess that is what happens when you start paying for locals).

I believe newspapers will suffer most I never bought one for years and see the money saved as partly compensating for the cost of the internet, before I would buy papers every day (overall it also saves many trees from being cut for paper). The same goes for phones using the PC to make calls to other PCs which is totally free.
In the UK mobile phone rates are not as cheap as in the USA.

Well the post office is booming here, the lines are longer than ever.
I say newspapers will go first.
Businesses still need land lines, so phone companies will be around for many years.
Believe it or not, Im 36 years old and I have never owned a cell phone. Amanda has had 1/2 dozen cell phones, but not me.
