checking the dates on this thread...looks like its past its initial expiration date...LOL

Last year i went to UK to a Tesco...seen all the milk was past its expiry date...i got some old UK woman all in a tizzy about it...i complained to the indian manager...then we realized that the dating system is backward to the US dating system...month and date reversed...how embarrasing was that....

needless to say, i hurriedly made my purchase and got out of there...

I worked at a small grocery. The owner of the store would take off exp dates sometimes. LIke plastic tubs of butter.

Since then I check dates. If there is no exp date I will not buy it. As far as buying past the date, I appricate the date being there and I can make my own decision as to whether I want to buy or not.

I check all dates on everything I purchase. Milk, egg, and meat products especially...Some grocery stores are notorious for putting earlier experation dates towards the front. I always push them to the side and go to the back which gives another week sometimes more.

I clean my fridge once a week and always throw out anything out of date. Also dried herbs go stale very quickly. Opened pickles, olives, mayo, mustard, ketchup....etc. etc. have to be kept on top of.

All vinegar should be kept in the fridge. It goes cloudy and stale at room temps. (Especially in Florida), all butter should be frozen and pulled as needed. Sweet butter is a much better purchase. Salted butter, from what I have learned is older stale butter with salt added to keep it going. ......You can always add salt!

Oils should not be refrigerated but kept in the dark and air tight.

When you are dealing with raw meat....and I know most of you know this but for those who don't!....It is imperative you use one cutting board, one knife, and don't use them for anything else.

Wash your hands with anitbactieral soap, and go on. Wash your sink with antibacterial soap, the cutting board, etc and let the cutting boards air dry.

I could go on and on, my family has not had any stomach ailments in about 10 years.

BTW..I used to conduct audits on gas stations/convenience stores (both announced audits and unnannounced/mystery shops)...often the audits included checking the expiration dates on commonly left items in the cases,,,I wasnt supposed to say anything if I found an expired product, but i could not in good conscience leave it in the cooler for someone to buy....I always pulled the product and insisted it be moved to the back room for disposal...I never got in hot water for it...

Do watchtowers ever expire? Or do they just become collectors items?

    Hey Clam -

I thought this thread might be on the WT being way past its expiration date.

    Anywho,

I bought packaged whole fryers on two different occasions. Boy were they FOWL! I got exchanges, no problema.

I have a whole other story about a very special fryer, but I'll save it for later ... [whetting the appetite]

I ALWAYS check the date. Instinctively, I go to the back of the counter when I reach for milk, eggs or any other perishable. It never occurred to me that someone would not check the date. I think the bible talks about this in Genesis or one of those first few books.

I am extra-super-careful on checking expiration dates! I DID let one go for the first time in AGES.... just last week I opened a can of Campbell's soup that was to be used by Sept 15th and I used it on Oct 1st. We are fine!

If anything does not SHOW any expiration date---I won't purchase it.
