I have to be careful what i post since i have been marked by the elders here. i just read a few posts about shunning on a business level. the Walmart greeter for one . i feel there are to many politically correct people in America. that use this excuse to pursecute others. the wt has over the years destroyed my family over such simple things like Birthdays and we only have one jw in the family. every year my jw dad pushes harder to destroy any family functions (holidays) . i have no respect for jw's what so ever, and will never have any. i've heard all the wt /jw's lies a million times. and i'm not falling for any of it , even under the name of freedom of religion, this waitress should have been fired and i'm happy she lost her job. maybe she should go work at BETHEL for $100 a month and try to sue the wt for making her clean toilets 40 hours a week . if i could i'd make this jw give her $38000 TO THE WT AND SEND HER STRAIGHT TO preach on a one way ticket to NORTH KOREA. THEN she will know what pursecution is.

While I intially thought the company was wrong in firing her, I think I'm seeing their point of view on this issue. I'm not sure what the States' laws are on hiring, but here in Canada, you're not allowed to ask what religion someone is on the application form, because religion isn't supposed to play a part in employer/employee relations anymore. So in that sense, I can understand the company being pissed off that she wouldn't sing 'Happy Birthday' as it's apparently part of the job. And if she was so dead set against singing this song of Satan Happy Birthday, she should have let the manager know up front. But she didn't. As per usual in Dubdumb land, they have to make a mountain out of a molehill. If this 19 year old Dub was truly a 'Christian', she would have quietly resigned her position when she was made aware that this was part of her job. Instead, she lets herself get canned and then sues for 'Wrongful Dismissal' and wins $38,000.

Not only can you NOT ask about a person's religious inclinations, you can't refuse to hire someone or dismiss someone for having a religious belief that is in conflict with company standards. For example, remember the case a few years back where a Sikh wanted to join the RCMP, but he was denied employment on account of his insisting to wear his turban and the ceremonial dagger? He won his case, and recently I saw a news item out of Edmonton showing a Sikh police officer in a turban and with his ceremonial dagger at his side.

I worked for a department store for a while and having been hired in the spring, there was never any discussion about the expectations regarding holiday greetings before I was hired. The manager asked me (illegally, I realized after the fact) whether I was married or single and whether I had children or was pregnant or was planning to become pregnant. I did, however, disclose that I was a JW and was not available to work on certain evenings during the week. When Christmas came around that year, the manager's underling announced one morning that everyone was expected to answer the phone with "Merry Christmas" rather than the usual "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" or "Good Evening". It would have only been inter-department communication, so it wasn't as though customer relations were being affected. Anyway, I approached the manager's underling, fully expecting to have my $6/hour job terminated on the spot For Righteousness' Sake™. Instead, he was quite understanding and accommodating. In a way, I was perplexed because here I was creating an issue, and he was refusing to Persecute™ me for it. It was that acceptance that started the way for me to see that Worldly People™ weren't so bad after all.

I am not a JW, and I don't care about birthdays one way or the other. I would never, under any circumstances, allow anyone to coerce me into singing 'happy birthday' or any other song. Anyone who has ever heard my voice would support my position on the matter.

if this was a gay, woman, black, jewish or muslim issue we wouldn't be having this discussion

The JW didn't need to be fired. Totally uncalled for. All the JW had to do was get sonmeone else to cover the birthday stuff and he/she could cover that persons work in the meantime. The solution is so simple yet as ususal all parties get caught up in the rethoric and miss the obvious

jonny cip: If you think North Korea is such a good place to send people then why not send yourself??? You should never recommend a course of action to anyone that you are not prepared to do yourself. Try it out and see if it's really the good idea you claim it is.

You think Hitler was too soft on the JW??? That is the most vile and dispicable thing I have yet heard on this forum, how can you not truely comprehend what millions of people had to go thru during Hitler's tyrrany. That was the sickest and most vile chapter in human history.

jonny cip, people like Hitler THRIVE because of people like you. If you had lived in Nazi Germany I could see you taking part in the holocaust, you'd have been just what the Nazi's wanted. A hate filled individual, so blinded by his feelings that if given the chance he'll give them full vent. It's people like you jonny cip that threaten democracy, freedom and rule of law. Thank god that most people saw the hatred you espouse as the abomination that it is and rejected it ir else we'd be living in a very different world right now

What sickens me more is that although it was stated by Scully that your posting rights had been restricted you still managed to get on here and further your hateful cause. Scully what's the point of calling him to task over his comments and restricting his postings if he's gonna be allowed to come back in and post some more of his hate filled musings??? This now seems like a double standard on your part and I'd apprciate a clarification because right now I am offended that the restriction seems to have had no effect. If you are going to go thru the trouble to disipline him and reminds us all of the rules at the same time shouldn't it be more obvious that real action was taken? Yet when we look we still see him posting offensive comments even if he is wording them differently

It's all down to the dubs embracing one of the many ridiculous beliefs that an assine character like Rutherford came up with. He talked a lot of non sense like medical science is demonic because it originated in pagan Egypt and the JWs shouldn't go to doctors.

Fortunately the dubs didn't take that seriously for long but they stack to the equally silly idea that birthdays are pagan and wrong.

Oh ya, I remember that......what total horeshit that was. I remember there was some kid in high school too who was a Sikh and insisted on wearing his dagger. Despite the "no weapons" rule in school, it went to court and he was allowed to carry a potentially deadly weapon.

I think it's the way we approach it. Something tells me you were a reasonable person Scully, even as a Dub. Had this 19 year old Witness spoken privately to the boss when she first started and explained her situation, it could have been resolved quietly, without any fanfare. Instead, she's working at a place where, from what I gather, is not much different than Hooters, and decides that her spirituality is sooooo strong that she can't do something simple like tell someone "Happy Birthday". Talk about double standards. There was an elder in my old Hall that ran a clothing store several years ago. Each Christmas he had a sign out front that said "Free Gift-Wrapping With Each Purchase". Since the sign was up ONLY during the Christmas season, it's obvious that he was (gasp!) participating in this most viiiile of evil celebrations, yet no one ever said anything to him.

I think it was wrong to fire her for that. Any restaurant I've ever been to where the waitstaff sings happy birthday doesn't involve every waiter in the house. She could have excused herself from it and went about doing the rest of her job. This girl who wouldn't sing, if she had any respect for the people she worked with, should have informed management before taking the job. If she didn't inform them of it, and then refused to do it, that's an indication of a disrespectful attitude toward her coworkers and manager.

That being said, I think most firings are due to "bad apples" being called out by co-workers. She probably had other behavior problems or just rubbed other waiters the wrong way, and they jumped on this one thing, being too eager to let her go. Which was really stupid on the part of the manager, and he probably lost his job, too. He should have known better. Build up a file, report her for being late, or other problems with coworkers. Give her warnings and then let her go if she doesn't turn it around.

I know an elder who got fired and claimed it was for being a witness. I didn't believe him for a second. I know this guy well enough to know he got fired for running his boring mouth all day and being lazy.

We all want to be protected from being fired over our religion or lack-of-religion, so this JW should be protected too.

As for the person who said Hitler went too soft on JWs and we should send them all to Korea? This person is in some real pain and needs to get some help. I feel really bad for anyone hurting this much. I'm sorry you are in so much pain. I know you don't mean that, or when you look at it in a few years from now, I hope you won't still be in that place.

I concur FULLY with EVERYTHING johnny has stated in this thread.

What part of "we are NO PART of this wicked system of things" does this $$$$jw$$$$ not comprehend? For that matter, every other jw in this "wicked sysyem"?

    Boo effin hoo already. Geezzzzzzzzzz

When are the jws who still post here going to stand up and tell their fellow members all the lies that they keep learning from all us apostates??

And you sit here and care about a crybaby jw who sues a worldly restaurant, as jw children are at risk...right now! LOL!!!!

    sKally

so, now you are turning your rage on jws who post here?

so because I haven't told my family I don't believe, I am responsible for the children who are at risk... right now?

let me tell you how I see it. People JOIN this religion. JOIN JOIN JOIN JOIN

I can't prevent people from doing that. The government doesn't have the resources to keep people from JOINING stupid religions that are harmful to themselves and their families. If the government is unable or unwilling to do that, how exactly am I supposed to do it?

    HUH?

I really hate that businesses that employ people are losing rights as to who they employ.

This does not have to be the huge issue it became.

I do not think she should have been able, AT ALL, to win a lawsuit about this.

    UNEMPLOYMENT, yes! LAWSUIT, no.

It's rediculous what people can sue for. We have let religion be the measuring stick for our rules. Its within Muslims religion to suicide bomb innocent people too. Are we going to say that its ok for that as well?

I tend to think there is more to this story than what is reported.

skally, I don't think you mean to agree with this statement johnny said

i was happy when i read the other thread about some stupid jw dying from child birth , b/c of blood.
