    YOUTHS--PURSUE GOALS THAT HONOR GOD

"Be training yourself with godly devotion as your aim. "-1 TIMOTHY 4:7.

    OPENING COMMENTS

^Blondie was a "youth" during the 60's. Did you know the WTS considers a person a youth until they they turn 21. Does the WTS point to Samuel going to the temple at 5 as justification for young baptisms? Can you think of any other "youths" in the bible that were ordained at 12 years of age or younger.

What were the goals for Blondie when she was younger and going to the meetings? Any change? At this time 1975 was looming, but there is no official date today, except VERY SOON NOW.

*** w70 8/15 pp. 500-501 par. 23 Is the World Puzzled at Your Course?—It Should Be! *** So, you who are Christian youths, let your schoolmates sneer, mock or ignore you because you choose to be different, because you do not have the time nor do you care for the associations that go with extracurricular activities such as sports, parties and outings. You just cannot afford to get involved in such things! You have far wiser goals than they have! Begin working toward them now by personal study, meeting attendance and the field ministry. Share in the vacation pioneer activity! It will be a safeguard to you as well as a source of many rich blessings.
*** w69 3/15 p. 171 par. 12 What Influences Decisions in Your Life? *** The influence and spirit of this world is to get ahead, to make a name for oneself. Many schools now have student counselors who encourage one to pursue higher education after high school, to pursue a career with a future in this system of things. Do not be influenced by them. Do not let them “brainwash” you with the Devil’s propaganda to get ahead, to make something of yourself in this world. This world has very little time left!(almost 30 years ago) Any “future” this world offers is no future! Wisely, then, let God’s Word influence you in selecting a course that will result in your protection and blessing. Make pioneer service, the full-time ministry, with the possibility of Bethel or missionary service your goal. This is a life that offers an everlasting future!
***g69 5/22, p. 15***If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. ... Therefore as a young person you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!

^How many snippets (brief quoted phrases from the bible) are in this article? Are they all in context or strung together to convey an idea that is not in the bible? How many citations...do you have enough study time to look them all up or is placing an uncited scripture that no one reads enough bible support for their assertions? Quotations in the paragraph, how many? Do you know what the WTS means when the put "compare" before a scripture citation? How many are OT rather than NT scriptures?

    START OF ARTICLE

Q1, 2) (a) Why did Paul commend Timothy? (b) How are young ones today 'training themselves with godly devotion as their aim'?

    1) "I have no one else of a disposition like his who will genuinely care for the things pertaining to you. Like a child with a father he slaved with me in furtherance of the good news." (Philippians 2:20, 22) The apostle Paul included this glowing commendation in his letter to first-century Christians in Philippi. To whom was he referring? To Timothy, his younger traveling companion. Imagine how this confirmation of Paul's affection and trust must have warmed Timothy's heart!

Young ones...youths...young people--^Have you ever heard a non-jw refer to teenagers or pre-teens or adolescents with such terms?

Have you ever heard an elder commend anyone, let alone a "young one" except on an assembly/convention part/re-enactment?

MS or ex-MS, is this how the elders talk about you or to you? Or is it always DO MORE, DO MORE?

Timothy genuinely cared for the things pertaining to Christ not an organization that claims to be the channel between Christians and Christ.^

    2) Spiritually-minded young ones like Timothy have always been a precious asset among Jehovah's people. (Psalm 110:3) Today, God's organization is blessed with many young ones who serve as pioneers, missionaries, construction volunteers, and Bethelites. Highly commendable, too, are those who zealously share in congregation activities while caring for other responsibilities. Such young people enjoy the true satisfaction that comes from pursuing goals that honor our heavenly Father, Jehovah. They are truly `training themselves with godly devotion as their aim.'-1 Timothy 4:7, 8.

spiritually minded--^every hear anyone but a jw say this phrase?

If under 18, do the older jws in the congregation treat you as a precious asset? Do they know your name, where you live, how old you are, who your parents are, or spent any time with you apart from activities centered on the KH?^

God's organization--^the word "organization" is not even in the bible...can it be a bible teaching?

Much information is available which discusses the teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses. Some of the web sites listed on the Resources page can lead you to this information. These articles are not meant to be a comprehensive discussion of Watchtower doctrine. The articles here have been selected because they are about subjects which come up often among persons who are considering whether or not to terminate their association with the Watchtower Society or who have been disfellowshipped from it.

The following articles have been written by former Jehovah's Witnesses. Each represents its author's personal views, but all have been prepared especially to assist those who have been associated with Jehovah's Witnesses.

“The Faithful and Discreet Slave and Jehovah's Witnesses” by Ronald E. Frye (former BRCI President) discusses the important Watchtower teaching which links the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses with the "slave" of Jesus' illustration in Matthew 24:45.

“Jehovah's Witnesses and their Different Good News” by Ronald E. Frye discusses the Witness view of their relationship with God, comparing the Watchtower view with clear Bible teachings. Especially helpful to start a discussion with a sincere, truth-seeking Witness.

“How We are Reconciled to God” by Ronald E. Frye. Additional discussion on the Biblical perspective on Watchtower beliefs about how Jehovah's Witnesses are saved. Good overview of the importance of being in a covenant relationship with God.

“Does God Work Through An Organization?” by Tom Cabeen (former Bethel Family member) presents a Biblical examination of the Watchtower concept that God works through an organization rather than with individuals.

“Where is the Body of Christ?” by Tom Cabeen addresses the concerns of former Jehovah's Witnesses who want fellowship with other Christians, but who feel uncomfortable associating with traditional churches due to teachings or practices which they feel are unscriptural or with which they disagree.

true satisfaction that comes from pursuing goals that honor......(not Christ but) our heavenly Father--Where's Jesus?

not enough to just "share," must "zealously share"

Q3) What questions will be considered in this article?

    3) As a young person, are you reaching out for specific spiritual goals? Where can you find help and encouragement to do so? How can you resist the pressures of this materialistic world? What blessings can you expect to reap if you pursue goals that honor God? Let us find answers to these questions by considering the life and career of Timothy.

Young person...young people, young ones, youths

specific spiritual goals--not materialism. Have you ever wondered how Brother PO can afford his new house, car, etc... because of his spiritual goals? Is it true that God is blessing him while other jws are starving?

pressures of this materialistic world--Translation: pioneer for a few years, find your mate, quit pioneering and have babies instead. It's okay if you have pioneered even for a year...

career of Timothy--career of "full-time service" not being a teacher, engineer, but construction is okay...why the difference? Is the university the devil's playground and construction people are more apt not to swear, get drunk regularly, smoke, have false ideas, etc.

Careers--is it like religions, all are false but one, the WTS? Does having a non-approved career mean that you don't trust in God? Some recent statements (all 2006) in the WT publications.

*** w06 1/1 p. 21 par. 7 How Firm Is Your Trust in God? *** Anyone who does not trust firmly in Jehovah might think differently. The majority of humans view material wealth as a major key to security. Hence, parents have encouraged their offspring to invest much of their young adulthood in higher education, hoping that it will prepare them for well-paying careers. Sadly, some Christian (jw) families have found the cost of such an investment to be very high, as their children have lost their spiritual focus and turned to pursuing materialistic goals.
Willingness to make sacrifices: Paul sacrificed a promising career in order to follow Jesus. He clearly made the right choice, although his life was sometimes hard from a material standpoint. (1 Corinthians 4:11-13) Jehovah does not promise a life of luxury, and sometimes his servants endure hardships. Our willingness to simplify our lifestyle and make sacrifices proves the strength of our determination to serve Jehovah.—1 Timothy 6:6-8.
*** w06 2/15 p. 9 Bolivia’s Isolated Towns Hear Good News *** “I had the opportunity to pursue a career in the city of La Paz,” said Luis not long ago. “But my parents always presented the disciple-making work as the most desirable career. So I took a short course in construction methods.
*** w06 4/15 p. 22 par. 14 “I Am With You People” *** The lesson we should learn from all of that is not about home design or decorating. Long before the exile, the prophet Amos had rebuked wealthy ones in Israel for their “houses of ivory” and for their “lying down on couches of ivory.” (Amos 3:15; 6:4) The fancy houses and decorated furniture did not last. Those things were plundered by enemy conquerors. Yet, years later, after an exile of 70 years, many of God’s people had not learned from this. Will we? It would be fitting for each of us to ask: ‘Frankly, how much emphasis do I put on my home and its decoration? What about arranging for extra education to advance a career, though doing that would take up considerable time for a number of years, crowding out important aspects of my spiritual life?’—Luke 12:20, 21; 1 Timothy 6:17-19.
*** w06 4/15 pp. 27-28 par. 13 Let Your Hands Be Strong *** Do you not agree that to continue enjoying divine blessings, we must resist seeking things for ourselves at the expense of Jehovah’s worship? That is so whether the activity or interest diverting our attention is the pursuit of wealth, get-rich-quick schemes, ambitious plans for advanced education to have a desirable career in this system, or programs for personal fulfillment.

[Picture on page 24] Timothy pursued fine goals

    Timothy's Background

Q4) Briefly outline Timothy's Christian career.

    4) Timothy grew up in Lystra, a small town in the Roman province of Galatia. He likely came in touch with Christianity as a teenager when Paul preached in Lystra about 47 C.E. Timothy quickly gained an excellent reputation among the local Christian brothers. On returning to Lystra two years later and learning of his progress, Paul chose Timothy to serve as his missionary companion. (Acts 14:5-20; 16:1-3) As Timothy matured, he was entrusted with even greater responsibilities, including crucial missions to strengthen the brothers. When Paul wrote to Timothy from prison in Rome about 65 C.E., Timothy was serving as a Christian elder in Ephesus.

likely--a WTS used word meaning "the bible does not say but we will add to the bible account."

quickly gained an excellent reputation among the local Christian brothers (meaning only the overseers)--are "youths" in the WTS 'quickly" gaining that reputation in their congregation?

Can the CO/DO of today's WT organization choose companions to travel with them?

According to the WTS are there any Christians outside the organization?

Notice how the WTS does not identify jws as the only true Christians, drawing some non-jws to make an investigation confident that they are a true Christian. Notice the words used "Christianity" versus "Christendom," "clearly identifiable Christian congregation," "great crowd.

*** w06 3/1 p. 7 Who Are Genuine Christians? ***Genuine Christianity Restored*** The record is clear. Since the death of the apostles, Christ has not been in much of what has taken place in the name of Christianity.
Even better, Jesus promised that in the last days of this system of things, he would gather his faithful disciples into a clearly identifiable Christian congregation that he would use to accomplish his will. (Matthew 24:14, 45-47) He is right now using that congregation to gather together “a great crowd” of men, women, and children “out of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues,” and he is uniting them under his headship into “one flock” under “one shepherd.”—Revelation 7:9, 14-17; John 10:16; Ephesians 4:11-16.
Turn away, then, from any institutions or organizations that have besmirched the name of Christ and defamed Christianity over the past two thousand years. Otherwise, as Jesus Christ told the apostle John, you could “receive part of [their] plagues” when God executes his judgment on them in the near future. (Revelation 1:1; 18:4, 5) Make it your resolve to be among those spoken about by the prophet Micah when he said that “in the final part of the days,” true worshippers—adherents of true Christianity—would listen to God’s instructions and “walk in his paths” of restored pure worship. (Micah 4:1-4) The publishers of this magazine will be happy to help you identify those true worshippers.
*** w05 1/15 p. 18 par. 13 Foregleams of God’s Kingdom Become a Reality *** Jesus foretold that apostates, like weeds sown among wheat, would infiltrate the Christian congregation and lead many astray. (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43; Acts 20:29-31; Jude 4) In time, these so-called Christians adopted pagan festivals, practices, and teachings, even labeling them “Christian.”

Q5) According to 2 Timothy 3:14, 15, what two factors contributed to Timothy's decision to pursue spiritual goals?

    5) Timothy evidently chose to pursue spiritual goals. But what led him to do so? In his second letter to Timothy, Paul mentioned two determining factors. "Continue in the things that you learned and were persuaded to believe," he wrote, "knowing from what persons you learned them and that from infancy you have known the holy writings." (2 Timothy 3:14, 15) Let us first examine the role that other Christians played in Timothy's choices.

persons and holy writings (in italics: no statement saying 'italics ours')

other Christians--in WTS jargon, only baptized jws and "approved associates" studying with jws and attending meetings.

    Benefit From Positive Influences

Q6) What training did Timothy receive, and how did he respond?

    6) Timothy was reared in a religiously divided home. His father was a Greek, and his mother, Eunice, and his grandmother Lois were of Jewish origin. (Acts 16:1) Eunice and Lois taught Timothy truths from the Hebrew Scriptures from his infancy. After they converted to Christianity, they no doubt helped persuade him to believe Christian teachings. Clearly, Timothy took full advantage of this excellent training. Paul noted: "I recollect the faith which is in you without any hypocrisy, and which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, but which I am confident is also in you."-2 Timothy 1:5.

religiously divided home--note that the WTS says that Eunice and Lois taught Timothy from the Hebrew Scriptures (OT) from infancy while yet Jews. There was not an NT portion of the bible as we know it today.

How many families where both parents are jws meet weekly to discuss the bible formally? One CO noted that few "family heads" (to include single parent families) were doing this, at least they weren't reporting it. That MS and elders should set the example and it would add 4 hours to the preaching totals each month from each of them if only one attending was not baptized. So was it the eternal life of the children or the hours on a time slip that mattered? I knew several who never did this even after this "encouragement," just reported that they had (per the testimony of the children involved).

no doubt--any phrase meaning "the bible does not say but..."

clearly--buzzword, meaning "even you should see this, dummy."

confident is also in you--do/did the elders express their confidence to you for others to hear?

Q7) What blessing do many young ones enjoy, and how can this be of benefit to them?

    7) Today, many young ones are blessed with God-fearing parents and grandparents who, like Lois and Eunice, recognize the importance of spiritual goals. Samira, for example, still remembers the long conversations that she had with her parents when she was a teenager. "Mom and Dad taught me to have Jehovah's view of things and to make the preaching work my priority," she relates. "They always motivated me to pursue fulltime service." Samira reacted favorably to her parents' encouragement and now enjoys the privilege of serving as a member of the Bethel family in her country. If your parents encourage you to focus on spiritual goals, give careful consideration to their advice. They have your best interests at heart.-Proverbs 1:5.

    young ones...young people...youths

God-fearing parents--according to current WTS definition, god-fearing does not necessarily mean baptized jw.

*** w97 11/1 p. 10 par. 8 Christians and the World of Mankind *** The first of these to become a Christian was Cornelius who, although not a proselyte, was “a devout man and one fearing God.” (Acts 10:2) In his commentary on Acts, Professor F. F. Bruce wrote: “Such Gentiles are commonly called ‘God-fearers’; while this is not a technical term, it is a convenient one to use. Many Gentiles of those days, while not prepared to become full converts to Judaism (the requirement of circumcision being a special stumbling block for men), were attracted by the simple monotheism of Jewish synagogue worship and by the ethical standards of the Jewish way of life. Some of them attended synagogue and became tolerably conversant with the prayers and scripture lessons, which they heard read in the Greek version.”

    long conversations--pressured and cultlike

Jehovah's view of things--Actually the WTS view of what 'Jehovah's view of things' is

motivated me to pursue full-time service--were the parents being self-sacrificing and regular pioneering themselves, setting the example? Should you 'give special consideration to their advice if they aren't?

serving as a member of the Bethel family--have many single women gotten into Bethel or do they have to marry up? If they are single, the Bethelites give it six months before they are married.

[Picture on page 24] What positive influences helped Timothy? Notice that both have beards although Timothy had a Greek non-Christian father. Did Gentile Christians have to grow beards to satisfy the Jewish Christians discomfort? Notice that Timothy's father is out of the picture and this implies that he was not a positive influence per the WTS.

Q8) How did Timothy benefit from upbuilding Christian companionship?

    8) It is also important for you to seek upbuilding companionship in the Christian brotherhood. Timothy became well-known to the Christian elders in his own congregation and to those in Iconium, some 20 miles away. (Acts 16:1, 2) He cultivated a close friendship with Paul, a dynamic person. (Philippians 3:14) Paul's letters indicate that Timothy welcomed advice and that he was quick to imitate examples of faith. (1 Corinthians 4:17; 1 Timothy 4:6, 12-16) Paul wrote: "You have closely followed my teaching, my course of life, my purpose, my faith, my long-suffering, my love, my endurance." (2 Timothy 3:10) Yes, Timothy closely followed Paul's example. Similarly, if you draw close to spiritually strong individuals in the congregation, you will be helped to develop sound spiritual goals.-2 Timothy 2:20-22.

seek upbuilding companionship in the Christian brotherhood--what about the sisterhood? Or are men in the WT organization required to avoid females...the Available After Armageddon (AAA) club?

Close friendship with Paul...Timothy welcomed advice...quick to imitate examples of faith

Did you have a close friendship with the elders, COs, DOs? Was their advice welcoming? Were they examples of the faith of the bible or the WTS?

closely followed Paul's example--not what he said, Jesus said some say but don't do

(Matthew 23:1-3) 23 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying: 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the seat of Moses. 3 Therefore all the things they tell YOU, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds, for they say but do not perform.

draw close to spiritually strong (in whose judgment, you, other jws, elders, WTS?)

And jws attending the meetings and turning in time be bad association?

*** g93 12/22 p. 27 Live a Double Life—Why Not? *** Consider, again, Tammy, who admits that her parents are “very loving.” She describes her father as “almost bubbling over with zeal, always talking about how Jehovah cares for us.” He even serves in the congregation as an elder. How, then, was she misled? “Bad association within the congregation,” she says. “Others would tell me about the fun they would have at different parties and about the drinking they were doing. Or they would talk about their boyfriends and how they would go out dancing after congregation meetings.”

[Picture on page 26] Are you reaching out for spiritual goals? (young teenager reading the bible with the aid of the Insight books) (young man being baptized; both have on white tee shirts and have mustaches, but no bald haircut)

    Study "the Holy Writings"

Q9) Besides choosing the right associations, what must you do to `train yourself with godly devotion as your aim'?

    9) Is reaching spiritual goals just a matter of choosing the right associations? No. Like Timothy, you need to make a careful examination of "the holy writings." Studying may not be your favorite activity, but remember that Timothy had to 'train himself with godly devotion as his aim.' Athletes often train hard for many months in order to reach their goal. Similarly, reaching spiritual goals requires sacrifice and serious effort. (1 Timothy 4:7, 8, 10, footnote) 'But how,' you may ask, `can studying the Bible help me to reach my goals?' Let us consider three ways.

careful examination of the holy writings--despite their attitude the WT publications are not the holy writings...always ask "brother, could you show that to me in the bible?"

studying the Bible--have you heard jws say "the magazine says" or "the paragraph says" or "the book says" or "the Society says" when they should be saying "the Society says"? Does that indicate that the bible is the authority or the WTS?

*** w98 3/15 p. 19 par. 4 Living Up to Christian Dedication in Freedom *** In order to avoid misunderstandings, Jehovah’s Witnesses try to be careful about how they express themselves. Instead of saying, “the Society teaches,” many Witnesses prefer to use such expressions as, “the Bible says” or, “I understand the Bible to teach.” In this way they emphasize the personal decision that each Witness has made in accepting Bible teachings and also avoid giving the false impression that Witnesses are somehow bound to the dictates of some religious sect. Of course, suggestions as regards terminology should never become a subject of controversy. After all, terminology is of importance only to the extent that it prevents misunderstandings. Christian balance is required. The Bible admonishes us “not to fight about words.” (2 Timothy 2:14, 15) The Scriptures also state this principle: “Unless you through the tongue utter speech easily understood, how will it be known what is being spoken?”—1 Corinthians 14:9.

(BTW, have you noticed that "the Society" phrase has been used less since 2003? In the Watchtower, before 2000, 30 plus times each year, 2000-42, 2001-19, 2002-0, 2003-3, 2004-1 , 2005-0, 2006-1?)

Should you examine what the WTS says carefully? Are you encouraged to do so by the WTS?

(1 John 4:1) Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world.

But does the WTS apply to its own teachings? This is the only occasion that the WTS applies Acts 17:10,11 this way.

*** w81 2/15 pp. 18-19 Do We Need Help to Understand the Bible? *** A NOBLE-MINDED VIEW*** How shall we view the spiritual food provided by this “faithful and discreet slave”? Should it be viewed critically—‘Oh, well, it might be true but then again it might not be and so we have to scrutinize it very critically’? Some apparently have felt that way about it. To support their way of thinking they have quoted Acts 17:11, which says of newly interested persons at Beroea: “Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so.”
But does this mean that those Beroeans were looking for flaws in the message they were hearing, or that their attitude was one of doubting? Does this set a precedent for regarding critically the publications brought forth by the “faithful and discreet slave,” with a view to finding fault? Not at all!
First of all, let us note the setting of the statement about the noble-minded Beroeans. Paul, accompanied by Silas, was on his second missionary tour. Due to persecution that arose, the brothers at Thessalonica sent them on to Beroea. In Beroea they met sincere Jews who had strong faith in God’s Word. These were not Christians yet. They were simply interested persons who had to satisfy themselves that what Paul was telling them had the support of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Up to this time, these devout Jews in Beroea may never have heard of Jesus Christ. What Paul was telling them was entirely new. So those noble-minded Jews in Beroea searched the Scriptures daily to make certain that the references that Paul gave were really part of God’s Word. And with what mental attitude did they pursue their studies? With a skeptical attitude, trying to prove Paul wrong? No, they were altogether unlike Paul’s critics on Mars Hill, for we read that they heard Paul’s testimony with “the greatest eagerness of mind.”—Acts 17:11, 32.
These Beroeans listened with a readiness, yes, an eagerness, to believe. Thus not only were they open-minded, but they were wanting to have this “good news” proved true. In fact, for a person to acquire faith he must have “the will to believe.” If he is determined not to believe, then no amount of evidence will convince him; for if a person looks for them he can always find excuses, plausible reasons for not accepting the accountability that belief will bring upon him. As the apostle Paul well said: “Faith is not a possession of all people.” (2 Thess. 3:2) But the Beroeans had the will to believe. They considered what they heard with a receptive frame of mind. As a result, “many of them became believers, and so did not a few of the reputable Greek women and of the men.”—Acts 17:12.
Jesus’ disciples wrote many letters to Christian congregations, to persons who were already in “the way of the truth.” (2 Pet. 2:2) But nowhere do we read that those brothers first, in a skeptical frame of mind, checked the Scriptures to make certain that those letters had Scriptural backing, that the writers really knew what they were talking about.
    OUR VIEW OF THE “SLAVE”
We can benefit from this consideration. If we have once established what instrument God is using as his “slave” to dispense spiritual food to his people, surely Jehovah is not pleased if we receive that food as though it might contain something harmful. We should have confidence in the channel God is using. At the Brooklyn headquarters from which the Bible publications of Jehovah’s Witnesses emanate there are more mature Christian elders, both of the “remnant” and of the “other sheep,” than anywhere else upon earth.

Q10, 11) Why will the Scriptures motivate you to reach spiritual goals? Give an illustration.

    10) First, the Scriptures will provide you with the right motivation. They reveal the wonderful personality of our heavenly Father, his supreme act of love in our behalf, and the eternal blessings in store for his faithful servants. (Amos 3:7; John 3:16; Romans 15:4) As your knowledge of Jehovah grows, so will your love for him and your desire to dedicate your life to him.

    right motivation--per the WTS

reveal the wonderful personality of our heavenly Father, his supreme act of love in our behalf--what about Jesus?

eternal blessings in store for his faithful servants (only baptized, faithful jws and their minor children)

*** w56 4/1 p. 208 par. 44 Making All Mankind One Under Their Creator *** For the sake of gaining more knowledge associate henceforth with the New World society of Jehovah’s witnesses. It is the only organization on earth today that is really practicing godly harmony and oneness under the one Shepherd Jesus Christ. It is the only visible organization that today offers the hope and the assurance to mankind of living through the unavoidable world catastrophe at Armageddon and surviving into God’s new world.
*** w71 1/15 pp. 63-64 Questions From Readers *** The reply must also be “qualified” because the Bible does not pointedly say how God is going to handle certain unusual cases, such as those involving mentally retarded persons who never had the capacity to learn about Jehovah and his purposes. Regarding these unbaptized persons, it is possible that family merit may apply as in the case of minor, irresponsible children who have a faithful believing parent or guardian.
*** w89 9/1 p. 19 par. 7 Remaining Organized for Survival Into the Millennium *** Only Jehovah’s Witnesses, those of the anointed remnant and the “great crowd,” as a united organization under the protection of the Supreme Organizer, have any Scriptural hope of surviving the impending end of this doomed system dominated by Satan the Devil. (Revelation 7:9-17; 2 Corinthians 4:4) They will make up the “flesh” that Jesus Christ said would be saved through the worst tribulation of all human history.
    *** w96 1/15 p. 17 par. 9 Jehovah’s Sheep Need Tender Care *** As a result of his dedication and baptism, he becomes ‘marked’ for salvation.—Ezekiel 9:4-6.
*** w89 1/15 p. 20 How Baptism Can Save Us *** By our works, we can show that “we belong to Jehovah.” Why, salvation depends on working faithfully as his dedicated slaves! (Romans 6:20-23; 14:7, 8) In ancient times, slaves were often marked on the forehead. By the preaching work today, the antitypical ‘man clothed in linen’—the remnant of Jesus’ anointed followers—is ‘marking’ those who will survive the end of this system. In this work the anointed are assisted by their associates, the “other sheep.” (Ezekiel 9:1-7; John 10:16) And what is the “mark”? It is the evidence that we are dedicated to Jehovah and are Jesus’ baptized disciples who have a Christlike personality.
Especially now is it vital that we have the “mark” and retain it, for we are deep into “the time of the end.” (Daniel 12:4) To be saved we must ‘endure to the end’ of our present life or of this system. (Matthew 24:13) Only if we thus remain faithful as witnesses of Jehovah will baptism save us.

    11) Many young Christians say that regular personal Bible study has been fundamental to helping them to make the truth their own. Adele, for example, was brought up in a Christian home but had never set any spiritual goals. "My parents took me to the Kingdom Hall," she relates, "but I did not do personal study or listen at the meetings." After her sister was baptized, Adele began to take the truth more seriously. "I set out to read the entire Bible. I would read a little and then write down a comment about what I had just read. I still have all my notes. I read the Bible in one year." As a result, Adele was motivated to dedicate her life to Jehovah. Despite a serious physical disability, she is now a pioneer, or full-time evangelizer.

*** w88 9/15 p. 14 par. 18 Listen—Jehovah’s Watchman Speaks! *** The antitypical ‘man in linen’ is the class of anointed Christians. They go from house to house to put a symbolic mark on those who become part of the “great crowd” of Christ’s “other sheep.” The “mark” is the evidence that such sheep are dedicated, baptized individuals with a Christlike personality. They ‘sigh and groan over detestable things’ done in Christendom, and they have come out of Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion. (Revelation 18:4, 5) Their “mark” will make it plain to God’s executional forces that they should be spared during the “great tribulation.” They can retain that “mark” by sharing with the anointed ones in marking yet others. So, if you have been ‘marked,’ share zealously in the ‘marking’ work.—Ezekiel 9:8-11.

    young Christians--only jw Christians

make the truth your own--peculiarly applies only to the WTS writings

read the entire Bible--Bethelites are required to read it in one year; Gilead missionaries in one month before the 5 month "training" course. Did you read the bible ever the way this young girl describes or even as an adult even an elder?

I would read a little and then write down a comment about what I had just read. I still have all my notes. I read the Bible in one year.--all jws could do this, but have they or only say they have. I used to play bible games that required deep reading of the bible, only one other jw could answer more than 2. One sister accused me of being possessed because I knew so much.

Notice that she did not do this until her sister was baptized. Perhaps sister was putting pressure on her and not associating with her sister as much?

despite a serious physical disability, she is now a pioneer. Probably her parents and the government pay her way. Would more jws in the same situation pioneer? Will more jws not in that situation, feel guilty they are not pioneering?

Do they really need a special issue of the WT to avoid saying "a pioneer, or full-time evangelizer"?

Q12, 13) (a) What changes will Bible study help a young person to make, and how? (b) Give examples of the practical wisdom contained in God's Word.

    12) Second, the Bible will help you to make needed changes in your personality. Paul told Timothy that "the holy writings" are "beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) By regularly meditating on matters related to God's Word and by applying Bible principles, you will allow God's spirit to refine your personality. It will nurture in you essential qualities, such as humility, perseverance, industriousness, and genuine love for fellow Christians. (1 Timothy 4:15) Timothy possessed these qualities, and they made him an asset both to Paul and to the congregations Timothy served.-Philippians 2:20-22.

help you make needed changes in your personality--and rest assured that your parents, elders, and other jws will tell you what is wrong with you. No need to read the bible or meditate personally...they will save you the time.

genuine love for fellow Christians--not the cold ignoring most jws give and get at their KHs or "love" from their clique members?

Why do younger jws have to be humble, persevering, industrious, and show love when they see the elders don't have to?

    13) Third, God's Word is a storehouse of practical wisdom. (Psalm 1: 1-3; 19:7; 2 Timothy 2:7; 3:15) It will help you choose your friends wisely, select wholesome entertainment, and deal with countless other challenges. (Genesis 34:1, 2; Psalm 119:37; 1 Corinthians 7:36) Making wise decisions now is vital to your reaching spiritual goals.

    choose your friends wisely

not even jws if they are "weak"

    "Fight the Fine Fight"

Q14) Why is pursuing spiritual goals not the easiest course?

    14) Giving priority to goals that honor Jehovah is the wisest course but by no means the easiest. When it comes to choosing a career, for example, you may come under a great deal of pressure from relatives, peers, and well-meaning educators who believe that a higher education and a lucrative career are the keys to true success and happiness. (Romans 12:2) Like Timothy, you will need to "fight the fine fight of the faith" in order to "get a firm hold on the everlasting life" that Jehovah holds out to you.-1 Timothy 6:12; 2 Timothy 3:12.

priority to goals that honor Jehovah--but where is Jesus?

choosing a career...pressure from relatives, and well-meaning educators (that's right, WTS, be sure not to alienate the non-jws until the privileged version of the WTS comes out.

Q15) What opposition did Timothy possibly face?

    15) When unbelieving family members disapprove of your choices, the test can be especially severe. Possibly, Timothy had to overcome such opposition. According to one reference work, Timothy's family probably "belonged to the educated and upper income bracket." His father may well have expected him to seek higher education and to continue a family business.* (Footnote: * Greek society placed a high value on education. Plutarch, a contemporary of Timothy, wrote: "To receive a proper education is the source and root of all goodness. ... It is this, I say, which leads on and helps towards moral excellence and towards happiness.... All other advantages are human, and trivial, and not worth our serious concern." -Moralia, I, "The Education of Children.") Imagine how Timothy's father may have reacted on discovering that Timothy preferred the dangers and financial uncertainties of missionary work with Paul!

unbelieving family members disapprove...test can be especially severe.

I knew a jw who moved out of the house, several hundred miles away, to go to college because he felt he was required to do so to honor and obey his earthly father who was no longer his spiritual head, or head since this young jw no longer lived at home. The elders agreed and promptly made him a regular pioneer and later an MS all the while he was going to university.

Or sending certain Bethelites to college to be lawyers (Judah Ben Schroeder)

And where in the bible does it say that Timothy's father opposed him. All guesses based on a non-jw publication/author.

Imagine--yes, imagine something not even in the bible as being true life.

Q16) How did one youth deal with parental opposition?

    16) Young Christians today face similar challenges. Matthew, who serves at a branch office of Jehovah's Witnesses, recalls: "When I began serving as a pioneer, my father was extremely disappointed. He felt that I had `wasted' my education by taking a job as a cleaner to support me in my ministry. He would taunt me, reminding me of how much I could earn if I took a full-time job." How did Matthew deal with that opposition? "I kept up a solid Bible-reading schedule and constantly prayed, especially at moments when it would have been easy for me to lose my temper." Matthew's determination has been rewarded. Over time, his relationship with his father improved. Matthew has also drawn closer to Jehovah. "I have seen Jehovah provide for me, encourage me, and protect me from bad decisions," says Matthew. "I would not have experienced any of these things if I had not reached out for spiritual goals."

Parental opposition--extremely disappointed...he would taunt me;boohoo where is the story that he was beaten and locked out of the house?

*** w78 9/1 p. 9 In Postwar Germany—Youths Praise Jehovah *** Similarly, Wilfried tells of how he and his mother often found themselves locked outdoors when they returned home from Christian meetings. Once they even had to spend the night in the car. At another time his father dragged him out of bed and began beating him with a lamp. But by remaining faithful, he earned, not only his father’s respect, but, what is more important, Jehovah’s approval.

    Keep Spiritual Goals in Focus

Q17) How may some mistakenly discourage those who plan to enter full-time service? (Matthew 16:22)

    17) A subtle challenge to your pursuing spiritual goals may even come from fellow believers. 'Why be a pioneer?' some may ask. `You can lead a normal life and still share in the preaching work. Get a good job and guarantee your financial security.' This may seem to be sound advice, but would you really be training yourself with godly devotion as your aim if you were to follow it?

A subtle challenge to your pursuing spiritual goals may even come from fellow believers. 'Why be a pioneer?' some may ask. `You can lead a normal life and still share in the preaching work. Get a good job and guarantee your financial security.'

And some did manage to become elders and MS without pioneering. Are we suggesting that all jws pioneer?

*** w87 2/1 p. 15 par. 1 Doing Our Utmost to Declare the Good News *** “A FEW years ago, many of us thought that only those with special circumstances could pioneer,” wrote a pioneer, or full-time minister, in Japan. “It seems we were wrong. We are learning that only those with special circumstances cannot pioneer.”
*** w05 9/1 p. 20 par. 9 We Shall Walk in the Name of Jehovah Our God *** Moreover, just as in Noah’s day, people today are going about their business, trying to live a “normal” life, refusing to heed the warnings being sounded. (Luke 17:26, 27)

Q18, 19) (a) How can you keep your focus on spiritual goals? (b) Explain what sacrifices you, as a youth, are making for the sake of the Kingdom.

    18) Some Christians in Timothy's time apparently had similar thoughts. (1 Timothy 6: 17) To help Timothy keep his eye on spiritual goals, Paul encouraged him, saying: "No man serving as a soldier involves himself in the commercial businesses of life, in order that he may gain the approval of the one who enrolled him as a soldier." (2 Timothy 2:4) A soldier on active duty cannot afford to be distracted by civilian pursuits. His life and the lives of others depend on his always being ready to act on the orders of his commanding officer. As a soldier under Christ, you must be equally single-minded and avoid becoming tied up in unnecessary material pursuits that could prevent you from fully accomplishing your lifesaving ministry.-Matthew 6:24; 1 Timothy 4:16; 2 Timothy 4:2, 5.

    apparently--another one of those buzzwords

    Who is the commander-in-chief? WTS/FDS/GB?

live-saving ministry--not all have to hear though

*** w00 1/15 p. 13 par. 17 “Keep on the Watch” *** Nevertheless, the Bible does not state that Jehovah will wait until every individual on earth has received a personal witness. Rather, the good news must be preached to Jehovah’s satisfaction. Then the end will come.—Compare Matthew 10:23.

    19) Rather than making a life of ease your goal, cultivate a self-sacrificing spirit. "Be ready to do without the comforts of life, as one of the army of Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 2:3, The English Bible in Basic English) In Paul's company, Timothy learned the secret of being content in even the most difficult circumstances. (Philippians 4:11,12; 1 Timothy 6:6-8) You can do the same. Are you willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the Kingdom?

a life of ease...self-sacrificing spirit...being content...make sacrifices for the sake of the kingdom

Not get full-time job, sacrifice retirement, will WTS help out older jws. One older jw had to go back to work fulltime at 55 to get the necessary pay into social security in order collect. Work fulltime now or later, is it different?

New English Bible in Basic English is used; what does the NWT say that it was looked over?

NWT (2 Timothy 2:3-4) 3 As a fine soldier of Christ Jesus take your part in suffering evil. 4 No man serving as a soldier involves himself in the commercial businesses of life, in order that he may gain the approval of the one who enrolled him as a soldier.

"Be ready to do without the comforts of life, as one of the army of Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 2:3, The English Bible in Basic English)

Blessings Now and in the Future

Q20, 21) (a) Describe some of the blessings that come from pursuing spiritual goals. (b) What are you determined to do?

    20) For some 15 years, Timothy stuck with Paul. Timothy witnessed firsthand the formation of new congregations as the good news spread to almost all of the northern Mediterranean area. His life was more thrilling and satisfying than it would have been had he chosen to live a "normal" life. By pursuing spiritual goals, you too will reap priceless spiritual blessings. You will draw close to Jehovah and earn the love and respect of fellow Christians. Instead of the pain and frustration that result from pursuing material wealth, you will enjoy the genuine happiness that comes from unselfish giving. Most precious of all, you will "get a firm hold on the real life"-eternal life on a paradise earth. -1 Timothy 6:9, 10, 17-19; Acts 20:35.

CARROT--eternal life on a paradise earth

    21) So if you have not already done so, we warmly encourage you to begin immediately to train yourself with godly devotion as your aim. Draw close to those in the congregation who can help you reach out for spiritual goals, and seek their guidance. Make regular personal study of God's Word a priority. Be determined to resist the materialistic spirit of this world. And always remember that the God "who furnishes us all things richly for our enjoyment" promises you that you can have rich blessings both now and in the future if you choose goals that honor him. -1 Timothy 6:17.

    CONCLUDING COMMENTS

It's summer and the good little jw boys and girls are "pioneering," right? Is it true that young male jws no longer have to be regular pioneers to get into Bethel?

The WTS has to get you hooked early before you buy that car and get tied down to payments or get married and tied down to supporting a wife and kids.

How many who pioneered from 18 onward are now pioneering 30 years later. Why can they be in good standing and quit pioneering?

Could use some rain, the flowers are looking good. We are doing some straightening up of the garage and the windows...have a few more projects. What are you doing today?

Homework: Casually bring up this topic around active jws: I was noticing that the Society seems to be getting creative with the dramas inserting dialogue and events that are not in the Bible. Take for example this Sunday's Watchtower article. Where does it mention any conversation between Timothy and his Greek father? I'd tried finding it in the publications, what did you think?

    Thanks, blondie.

I'm proud to say that the last time I pioneered was 6 years ago (I was 15/16), and that was just for a month because my parents made me.

I'm not pioneering during the summer months. Instead, I'm looking for a part-time job.

Take that, Splane! What a moron.

You just cannot afford to get involved in such things!

A witness said, when a comment about rollerskating came up, and she had never been to a rink to skate when she was growing up...that she was Proud of that.

She is a young adult. WHAT the heck is there to be PROUD of, that you've never been to a skating rink with friends(even witness friends) in one's life. What does Pride have to do with it?

The above clip makes perfect sense to me now though on why she said it. Thanks for posting that Blondie.

To add more, to me, this would imply that any witnesses who EVER have went out skating at a rink, have been LESS in step with Hovah than she, would it not? OUTINGS?? are they kidding? What are you supposed to be as a youth? A 24 hour worship and training zombie?

This study article is written to make parents feel guilty if their children aren't out pioneering. My oldest daughter (now 33) showed no interest whatsoever, and I spent many a sleepless night wondering where I went wrong.

I'm so glad to be free of such worries. In JW land you are considered nothing unless you are "reaching out" for "privileges" and receiving the "warm commendation" of the "brotherhood" for so doing.

The guilt trips they lay on everyone is just terrible. Come, Lord Jesus, with your double-edged sword and smite them hip and thigh! Amen.

Blondie said: "have you noticed that "the Society" phrase has been used less since 2003?"

Hey Blondie, I'm sure you know this & probably have the reference for it, but I'll spit it out anyway.

As part of the "pure language" (cult-speak that evolves to weed out 'postates) saying "the society" is fast becoming a buzz word to show you're not in step with "present truth".

Now we say, "the F&D slave has shown" .... or, "the Bible teaches".

Supposedly it doesn't sound quite as "cultish" that way.

Blondie, I certainly enjoyed your WT study this week. Thank you very much.

I have this to add as a little bit of interesting trivia:

    You said:

(BTW, have you noticed that "the Society" phrase has been used less since 2003? In the Watchtower, before 2000, 30 plus times each year, 2000-42, 2001-19, 2002-0, 2003-3, 2004-1 , 2005-0, 2006-1?)

I noticed in my congregation around 2003 and after that our then CO was using the phrase "the Branch," and soon thereafter the elders and ms's started replacing "the Society" with "the Branch." Our book study conductor, who really liked to explain new things like this to his group, took the time to explain to us that we were supposed to substitute the new phrase "the Branch" for "the Society." The brothers saying public prayers made efforts to use the new phrase, and we definitely started hearing this more and more "from the platform." I am pretty sure the reasoning behind it had to do with the change in the organization of the legal entities of the WTBTS and the supposed delegation of some of the GB's responsibilities to different Branch committees. Regardless of why, it was kind of freaky to see such a change in speech and practice happen relatively overnight like that...especially since that phrase "the Society" had been in very regular use for decades.

Reminded me of M.P. and the Holy Grail: "We are no longer the Knights who say 'Ni!'"
