i am not excatelt a fan of the police, but, as the video starts, i was thinking, you didn't see what started this. then as it progressed, i saw the very thing that makes me hate cops. you can tell they are over zealous pigs. i know not all cops are bad, but, alot are. there was no reason to put a choke hold on that girl and other guy, and absolutely no reason to arest the cameraman. freaking nazis man.

A video of six skateboarders being arrested by Hot Springs police is creating controversy that reaches far outside the city, spread through the Internet.

The skateboarders, who were violating a city ordinance, are claiming police brutality and some say the pictures back up their claim.

The video shows a 13-year-old being held to the ground by his throat. It also shows a girl being held in what appears to be a chokehold. Now, Hot Springs police are being bombarded with phone calls.

The tape shows Officer Joseph Williams putting two skaters in what appears to be a chokehold. It also shows a 13-year-old being wrestled to the ground.

Skater Skylar Nalls, 19, says, "All of a sudden, the officer came out of a store and ran up to the kid in front of me, a 13-year-old and grabbed him from behind. The kid didn't know he was after him and started choking him on the ground."

Skylar’s mom, Renee Lovett, says, "The language-Skylar says none of his friends talk the way the policemen were talking. He said the words that were used towards them, it was really bad language. He said none of my friends talk like that."

Hot Springs Police Department spokesman McCrary Means says, "If a subject becomes confrontational, the officer has a right to defend himself. There are certain steps: first of all a verbal command. Like I said, if that subject becomes combative, that officer needs to do all he can do to get that subject under control."

The Hot Springs Police Department issued a statement saying Williams is on paid leave while an internal investigation is conducted.

Eyewitness Bobbie Golden says, "The kids most definitely were out of line. They shouldn’t' have been skateboarding down here."

Downtown Hot Springs storeowner Bobbie Golden says what you don't see on the tape is the girl skater at one point jumping on the officers back while another was trying to pull the officer’s arm off their friend.

Golden says, "When the police officer asked him to stop, if he had gotten off his board and walked, there wouldn’t have been a problem at all but he didn't. He started telling him, ‘Let's go! Let's go!’"

The day this happened, June 21, was considered nationally as “Go Skate Day.” In light of that, some think the teens were setting up the officers to intentionally look bad. Reporter Melissa Dunbar asked the teens about that and they said that was not the case. They also told Today’s THV they carry cameras every time they skate.

Quite excessive for violatating a city ordinance.

Proof that putting a tin star on anyones chest just goes to some peoples head.

To combat the skateboard issue in my area, towns and cities have spent a fortune biulding skateboard parks. They were visited by the three or four local skateboarders for about a month. Now they are empty.

We make countless number of efforts to help our youth. Sometimes you can't win.

It was a city ordinance for Christ sake. Just tell the kids to move along.

This type of police action make people hate, despise, distrust and disrespect those who may one day save our lives.

I am surprised to see how physical this cop got with these kids. Esp where it is. Very, very high tourist place.

Kids can no longer be mischevious. Kids just cant be kids. A nice warning, esp considering the day it was for skateboarders.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I read somewhere that two of the kids were on house arrest for a prior skate boarding incident.

dont know if its true or not, but seems reasonable.

    Okay....

Time for a wildly unpopular opinion. I work in Law Enforcement...I am not a LEO but have spent 26 years working in public safety.

I don't have any personal beef against skate boarders and I agree that kids need an outlet..a chance to be kids. I am also NOT supporting brutality in any form.

Okay..disclaimers done - people keep posting comment like...its just a city ordinance...it was skateboard day....kids need to be kids....

We have a city ordinance preventing jack hammering after 10 pm.....shooting varmit animals within city limits....AND against skate boarding.

Would you like us to just give your neighbor who runs power tools all night or the guy who has a gopher problem and shoots his .22 rifle in the front yard while your kids are outside playing just a nice warning since it is just a city ordinance after all ?

We have a skate board ordinance because skate boarders...just trying to have fun...caused tens of 1000's of dollars in damage to sidewalks, steps, curbs, planters and other infrastructure at taxpayers expense. There were also injuries to pedestrians that needed to stop. SOOOO..we built a skatepark...with their input and suggestions,,,,,and they still insist on skating downtown and violating the city ordinance.

Should they be picked up and fined if they break the law ? Yes. Is there a reasonable way to do it ? Sure. Some local communities have a forfiture policy. If you violate the skate board ordinance you lose your gear...that can get pretty expensive.

If their city has no skate park...lobby the city council and work within the system to get one...and then USE IT.
