rw, i agree the kids were breaking the law and should be dealt with. but, a choke hold is really excessive. i break the law alot, and know there's reprecussions for that. but, if i'm just standing there or protesting peacefully my arrest, i don't expect to be hit or choked.

I was wondering where you were going with this Mr. Wagoner. Let's see if you get flamed, but I understand what you were saying without condoning what the cop (I haven't seen the video) did.

As I said, I don't condone WHAT he did...however if you listen to the unedited version on youtube at the beginning you hear him explaining that He ordered them to stop and they took off. Anyone that has ever watched "COPS" on TV knows that LEO's get a HUGE adreneline boost if someone runs and it can make matters much worse.

It is often caled "contempt of cop" and while it still does not justify excessive force, ignoring a lawful order from an officer does escalate that situation.

If the skate boarders had simply ridden to city hall in protest (for skate board day) and stopped when the officer order them I would dare say the video would be much different. Running may not be physically fighting off an officer but it is in many cased considered resisting arrest.

Will the officer be disciplined? very likely. Would the kids have been "choked" of they had simply stopped when the officers ordered them to? Not in most cities.

i hear ya rw. as much as i don't like cops, i have friends that are cops. i call them pigs and they laugh. as i stated, i'm not excately a law abiding citizen, but, have personal experiences with police brutality. if i get caught, i go peacefully, but, i am a really big guy, and a cop had me in cuffs, and like ron wood says, i had the right to remain silent, but, not the ability. well, i'm sure i don't have to tell you what happened next, but, even though i was mouthing off, i thought that cop was chicken shit for hitting me while i was in cuffs.

There are certainly bad eggs in all parts of society....Cops and Skateboarders included.

I just didn't want this to be a one sided discussion...we all take at least some responsibility for our actions. The cop will pay the price for losing his cool and maybe the kids will learn that there are better ways to buck the system that don't involve an unpleasant encounter with the police.

and i respect that rw. as i said, i have cop friends that are great at their jobs, it's just, when people like me see stuff like this, it makes us mad because it happens so much.

Hmm, how come it's only here that it's a big deal?

here? Do you mean here at JWD or here in the US? I ask because I have read comments(not here) from other countries that this is one reason why they do not like US.

    Disproportionate response by the police.

The only defense; that we appreciate the police preventing misdemeanours, is no defense for disproportionate response.

No lives were threatened and the nuisance factor was incomparably ulowaer than jack hammer working after 10pm. If cops behave like this when they are set up (I don't believe they were as Skate Punks ido carry cameras), then they don't deserve to be cops. Complaining about someone getting caught abusing authoro-tay is like saying someone setting up a situation that exposed a cop who used excessive violence was in the wrong.

Saving this so I can show my kids.......they skate a lot and often face discrimination.
