What Rock Bands did you miss in concert due to WTS pressure?

i was on public reproof and bought tickets to Oingo Boingo and X and my dad told the brothers i was going to the concert and they said that it would show that i was exhibiting a bad attitude and it would delay getting my restrictions back. so i went to the venue and sold the tickets, then waited for my girlfriend who was inside and didn't know the situation....after the show i met up with her and we had a heavy make out session in the back of my friend's car. 1986, pre-cellphone, beeper era, there was a time when you couldn't get in touch with people instantly.

i should've just went in and lied that i sold the tix, but i was so terror stricken that jehovah was on my ass and would find a way for the elders to find out....since they seemed to find out a lot of things, but that was b/c too many mouthy kids in our hall and everyone had to keep an eye on what i was doing.

also missed The Cure and The Smiths.

i made up for it big time and saw all the bands i wanted to see when i turned 18....what was great about jws is that they were always behind the curve, so i could go see the red hot chili peppers in '87, and they'd think it was a g-rated latin act or something (instead of four guys playing naked with socks on their penises and ripping girls shirts off when they came on stage), but if i went to see motley crue or poison they would've been on my ass b/c they would know that was a rock concert.

oh, and my dad had this thing where if the band was black, they were 'ok' b/c that meant they were soul or oldies....so, i made him take my friends and i to see fishbone and the untouchables play in '85. that was my first slam pit....i think he was so embarrassed for me having gotten one over on him he never mentioned anything about the show and i think he was kind of scared b/c the whole audience was pretty much punk. that was great.

i asked him about it recently and he said he remembers the bouncers throwing the kids who were trying to stage dive off the stage and being rough with them and it pissed him off and that he got a kick out of fishbone. he doesn't remember telling me how 'bad' fishbone was, screamin their songs like 'lyin ass bitch', etc. and i pretended i was just as horrified as he was at the time.

Everything. I was 20 the first time I went to a concert. So far I've seen Cradle of Filth and have tickets to Projekt Revolution with about 10+ bands. I've also seen some smaller concerts locally D.O.A., Cancerbats and local metal acts.

D.O.A.'s "War on 45" was one of my first punk rock cassettes. that and Suicidal Tendencies, DRI "Dirty Rotten LP", Black Flag "My War" and a band called The Fontanelles, who were amazing and they had a demo release called the Jungle Bitch Tapes that was given to me by a girl whose older sister was friends of the band. The lead singer died of a heroin overdose before they did much else, but they had a bit part in a cheezy horror film that MS3000 used in one of their episodes. The lead singer reminded me a lot of Stiv Bators....too bad there wasn't more released by them.

There's another band w/ the same name that's not them.

that was all in 1984 when i first found out about the maximumrocknroll radio show and started skateboarding.

especially with black flag, it was so refreshing at 14 to find such angry aggressive music that spoke directly to something welling up inside of me.

Never missed any shows because of Dubs, the only reason I wouldn't go would be lack of money, and that's truly the only reason. Now I have my own band, and we play all the time, I'm pretty sure that some of our blues songs probably aren't WTS appropriate too, in fact I made sure that we'd have a couple of those.

Ween, too vulgar. They Might Be Giants always came to town on meeting nights.

I wanted to go to concerts. Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Mind you I wasn't a good dubbie, I was living under the control of one.

I won tickets to see the Stones for their first Boston appearence. That was the one that started late because Mick was arrested in another state and the mayor of Boston drove down to bail him out so the show would go on. I wasn't allowed to go so I sold the pair of tickets for 20 dollars. What was I thinking?

The heaviest concerts I ever saw as a minor were hippy folk acoustic stuff at small local venues. Woo-hoo. "Rock" concerts were not for true Christians.

When I turned 18 I started seeing just about anything I felt like. My parents had no idea who the Talking Heads or INXS were.

Hey Monophonic, I almost forgot all about The Untouchables. I think they were one of the most entertaining, high-energy groups I've ever seen.

With that many players though, I bet they had trouble just paying for gas. Good times.

The Eurythmics, I was 21 and still living at home. A cousin and his best friend were going to LA to see the band and wanted me to come (one very good reason - I had a car). My mother didn't want me to go and even forbade me to go. I told her I was an adult and she couldn't stop me. I went and had a blast.

I DID go to see Led Zeppelin! Yeah - I was with two JW buddies, one really into music who is now a fader, and the other not into music and a hard ass elder today.

I think it was 1971, and it was at the old World Fair Grounds in New York City. Buddy Guy was one of the opening acts, and my friend just reminded me that Bill Graham of Fillmore East fame was the MC.

Another cool thing: When I went to the Yankee Stadium Convention in NYC in 1969, I was with a bunch of 20-something JWs (I was still a young teenager) - and I convinced them to go to Fillmore East the night before the convention began! That was a very cool experience. These guys were all musically clueless - and this was one of those 8-day, 10 am to 9 pm conventions.

During the convention, I snuck out with my fader buddy and another JW who is also out now, and we spent a day down in Greenwich Village.

    Good memories!

U2 - The Joshua Tree tour 1987. The night before a circuit assembly. Parents said NO.

Was also counseled by an elder when he heard I was going to INXS, the same year I think. I went anyway. Such a rebel.
