What Maintains the Universe?

Well, I guess this belongs here: http://archives.cnn.com/2000/TECH/space/07/20/speed.of.light.ap/

Scientists have discovered that, not only is the speed of light not constant, it can go FASTER.

Nobody is maintaining the universe, the galaxies are traveling farther and farther apart, there is less and less usable energy in the universe, our moon is getting farther from the earth as we speak, the speed of light is decreasing, our sun will eventually burn out as all stars do.

If anybody IS maintaining the universe, they better get on the ball, we only have a couple hundred billion years left!!!

The quantum world is a strange strange place, and it's foamy!

Currently there doesn't appear enough mass to maintain the universe as it is. The universe's expansion is accelerating, and eventually in the far future long after the stars have gone out and the last black hole has evaporated away the universe will become a cold dark mist of subatomic particles.

Here's our best guess so far: The Five Ages of the Universe

    very good questions.
but theres one problem about it.

for me it implies a lil' bit that there NEED to be an intelligence controlling it. does it? thats the question i think.

does it require an intelligence to maintain the universe?

if not you have to accept that some weired force is just "there". like the laws of physics.
if yes you have to accept that there is some weired entity which is intelligent and is just "there".

    :-D

The problem with these questions is akin to a blind man describing an elephant after feeling its tail, we simply do not have enough information to arrive at an accurate answer. Because we do not have all the information we are forced to insert concepts like "dark matter" to make the equations work. I think we will have the answer within our lifetime

I am currently working on the idea that all the matter in the universe is "glued on" to God's body (the ether).

Sort of like the concept of Akasha.

They are maintained in the same way that cells are maintained in our body. By us, not consciously, but by us nevertheless.

How about this for a mind bender ...

The universe is not empty, but fill of "spirit", full of "ether". Some ether, is more dense that others - so we get matter.

Take as SOLID - ice... add energy

it makes LIQUID - water (less dense), not add more energy...

it makes VAPOUR - steam (even less dense). (Gas)

    The three states of matter

I wonder what would happen if you added even more energy. Would it make "ether / spirit" ?

Doesn't Einstein reckon that as something breaks the speed of light, it becomes PURE ENERGY.

Maybe then it has broken free of this universe in which we live ?

Phew, glad to have got that off my chest. Now I am ready to be attacked

It's already been pointed out but it's worth re-iterating. The universe is not being maintained. It's ever so slowly deteriorating. Before it does so, lots of interesting things can happen but ultimately it's going to be cold and dark and motionless.

    AlphaOmega:

I am currently working on the idea that all the matter in the universe is "glued on" to God's body (the ether).

What work could you possibly be doing on such an antiquated idea?

They are maintained in the same way that cells are maintained in our body. By us, not consciously, but by us nevertheless.

How could we, mere statistical anomalies in one tiny little backwater of the universe possibly maintain the whole thing. How did the universe manage for the 13 billion years before we showed up?

How about this for a mind bender ...

The universe is not empty, but fill of "spirit", full of "ether". Some ether, is more dense that others - so we get matter.

Ether - how quaint! That might go down well with a New Age audience but for anyone who knows even elementary physics, it's embarrassing.

I wonder what would happen if you added even more energy. Would it make "ether / spirit" ?

    No.

Doesn't Einstein reckon that as something breaks the speed of light, it becomes PURE ENERGY.

    No.

Maybe then it has broken free of this universe in which we live ?

    What could that even mean?

Phew, glad to have got that off my chest. Now I am ready to be attacked

To avoid leaving yourself open to such "attacks", just crack open a physics textbook every now and then.

    I have absolutely NO idea!

However, I am excited at the prospect that one day, whether alive or 'dead' I may get to find out!

Imagine, if we really do survive our material bodies and get to find out 'everything'!!!! Wow!

And if we don't, well, we will never know anyway!

It's a win win situation all round!!! (If you can call being completely dead and unbothered' winning'!)
