Terry,
All humor aside (correct Americanized spelling of humour), I do not understand why this is so important to you. Is something else under your craw?
Perhaps I have a cavalier attitude toward this forum. I view it as similar to texting. Is spelling all that important? It is not a press release, nor a journalistic piece. This forum is just a way of bonding with others in a similar situation.
Is one that is well versed in English and Grammar neccessarily smarter than those who are not? Not really. I know of many feckless people that can put a sentence together correctly. Look at Teddy Jaracz!
I hope that you can chill and enjoy this more. Lighten up for your own good!
JK
Good lord. Get over it, Terry. This is a discussion board where people come to process their experiences. Great things happen here that have absolutely nothing to do with spelling. The important thing is that people are INVOLVED, not that they know how to spell it.
(aside to Fe203 girl: nice tits)
I don't think it's right to say that Terry needs to lighten up. A fundamental thing to realize is that different personalities require and place importance on different things. As an author, Terry has every right to have reverence for words and exact care when composing. That's not something that needs to be changed; that merely needs to be recognized. Society has great need from such persons--they make excellent accountants. ;-)
I dislike seeing spelling and language usage errors, too. I self-edit most of the time, but even when I do, errors creep in.
I agree with Terry and Poppers that spelling errors and grammar mistakes take focus away from what is being expressed. I have a personal philosophy that literacy is the MOST important SKILL (as opposed to personal quality or character trait) that a person can develop because to be successful at almost anything else in life, good reading skills are critical. From good reading skills one can gain good grammar and speaking skills. Like it or not, people ARE judged by the way they present themselves, and this includes in person or on a discussion board.
Of course, there are those of us who tend to use EMPHATIC caps a bit too often, which is often deemed an indication of poor writing skills because one should have been able to convey with the choice of words which points deserve emphasis Yet, I must have SOME creative leeway, no? And then there are the runon sentences ...
<sigh>
JohnDoe wrote "Once we see things like this, we then realize that the "correct" usage of words is completely subjective and determined by a select group of people. Correct and actual usage are often at a great variation to each other." and then claimed there IS no correct usage.
In both Spain and France there are actual goverment entities that are the guardians of what is correct language usuage in those tongues. I don't know if similar agencies exist in other countries. I do not thnk there is such an agency in the U.S., but I disagree that there is no such thing as common standards for proper English. That there are regional variations according to local dialect is undisputed.
Terry,
My advice is to wince once and move on. As is evidenced by the responses to this thread, there are plenty of people who don't attach the same importance to being well written as you do. Alas!
out
Terry just has a lot of SPECIFICITY
He taught me a new word and eveen pronounced it for me....soooo
I forgive him for his specificity.
Terry if I'm misusing this word...wrong context....tis yer own fault...
you should have told me what it meant.
I'll tell you what annoys me--piss on the toilet seat!! Now that's something I think we can all agree on, except perhaps for perverts like berean (how do you spell that again?).
Ladies can't be perverts...can they??
This is about your smokescreen re h-m-m-m... right???
Back it up my man....gooogle it...I dare ya
'Lurkers still in the Kingdom Hall want to dismiss us as cretins and mental defectives. A lazy approach to spelling certainly reinforces this prejudgement'
I am going to try and not get sarcastic in my response to this thread because despite some comments I have made recently to the author, I do recognise and respect him for the intelligent and sometimes lovable human being that he is............although his approach and manner annoys me on occassion..............as I am sure mine does others............
BTT.....
Would it not be arguable that perhaps lurkers would be observing how we treat each other................they live by the concept of 'you will recognise Gods people by the love they have amongst themselves'....................and say a lurker felt that the love was missing in his congregation, or his entire JW experience.............would he feel the love reading a thread like this.
Not that I am suggesting this site as an alternative to the religion..................but sometimes the way people are toward each other on here would be enough to send them running back to the JWs screaming 'Take me back please.....all is forgiven'.......and no I dont exclude myself from being guilty of this.
Peace and good thoughts to you all
Terry,
Humor (humour) returns:
In my opinion, your opinion is highly opinionated!
