I think the term "sex offender registration" is too broad. I think they should come up with a more specific classification like "child molester registration" or "adult rapist registration." Otherwise, how do you know if someone is a danger or not.
Up until recently homosexuals were the targets of police and many were convicted on outdated sodomy laws. Technically, they could be called "sex offenders" because they were convicted of a sex crime. Likewise, prostitutes that get arrested and convicted for practicing the "oldest profession" are also technically "sex offenders."
Heck, even masturbating alone is a "crime" that Florida prosecutors are seeking convictions on according to this article from the ABA. It would not surprise me in the least to see those convicted being required to register as "sex offenders." Perhaps they should open up a new "masturbation registry" for repeat offenders.
As I said, the term is too general, and I feel it is becoming a tool for politicians to terrorize their constituents. They need to make more specific "registrations."
Now, where should a child molester or rapist live? Perhaps we should have concentration camps.

I dont want to defend sexual offenders. But when the government classifys someone they do so with a very broad brush.
I raised my son in the 70's. Adam Walsh was kidnapped and found in Florida, His father went on to be a crime crusader. When Adam Walsh story hit the news, all the milk cartons in Cleveland Ohio had missing children on them. It was very upsetting.
The reality was all these children were not missing, they were with one of their parents. The media and the govenment did not advertise that fact.
A man could be 18 and have a 17 year old girl friend and the parents get pissed at him. That man will be a sex offender for the rest of his life, living under a bridge.
The government rules by fear. If you are afraid you will tax yourself for mucho police to protect you. But they will never be there in your time of need. They will be there to fill out the report for the insurance company.

I have checked the registered sex offenders in my area and a number of them are in the 18 yr old boyfriend (or girlfriend) having sex with a 17 yr old. Lots of jws marry by 16 or 17.

jb and wednesday bring up an important point. I watched a documentary about sex offenders in Georgia. One of them did not participate in any active abuse. She simply allowed her pregnant daughter's boyfriend to live in her home until the daughter and boyfriend got married. She still has to register for the rest of her life. Another case was that of a young woman who had oral sex with her boyfriend when they were both teens. She, too, is required to register for the rest of her life.
As for the real molestors, they've got a place among JW's if only they knew it.

In WA state they have a breakdown of the age span as what is considered statutory rape. An 18 y/o having sex with a 17 y/o is not considered stat rape now. But that varies alot throughout the states.
