Jehovah's Witnesses Today & Yesterday

Some years ago in a gathering two older sisters were talking to me about how JWs today are not like the JWs of years ago and how the ones today are "weak" compared to the old time ones etc. (images of older people who were persecuted in WWII). Their attitude was not unusual because certain other older ones also felt this way.

To myself, I felt this was not a fair comparison because the older ones grew up and lived in an entirely different world. The whole damn planet was different!

These people did not have the pressures and temptations of people today and therefore cannot judge.

It's funny. Some JWs that I knew decades ago as being "weak" or "immature" are still around and are considered congregation pillars.

i think for the most part this is true of all religions and of religious thinking in general.

people take the concept of obedience to authority much less seriously today than

in the past when JW's were much harsher and so were other religions

no one expects the spanish inquisition

Joel, the difference is that other groups grow. JWs don't because of their restrictiveness. Take away enough liberties and people stop following blindly. They rebel.

Simply put, the Jehovah's Witness of today has no zeal. No understanding of even the Witnesses viewpoint toward scripture or prophecy. Since reasoning and research is truly discouraged, most JWs are on automatic control. They're there in body but the mind is far away.

I think a lot of them plan on just coasting into the New World (New System?..New Order?..what do they call it these days?)

I think they think if they just stay plugged in to it even loosely, if it really is the truth, then just being a JW is enough.

Didn't Rosalee talk about this one time? She said something like the young ones today don't kiss ass like we did. I don't remember her exact words, but I remember wondering about whether she's right or not since she WAS a JW posting on an apostate website.

I've seen it also. When I was younger, we believed...actually believed in Armageddon coming soon, in our lifetime. There was a sense of urgency to field service. There was a sense of needing the meetings and the conventions.

We were separate from the world. We didn't try to "fit in" with the world. We weren't "weekend witnesses". We walked the walk and talked the talk. We wore it on our sleeves.

Now, JWs are witnesses in name only. They try to dissolve into the background when it comes to the "world". They want to be as normal as possible.

How they dress even shows it. JWs today dress not much different than the rest of society. When I was young, we stood out as different.

The oldsters might still have some of the zeal from the old days, but anyone under the age of 40 doesn't know what it was like back in the day...just as my generation doesn't have a clue as to what it was to lug around a phonograph and have dogs loosed on us.

I see young JWs get away with shit that I never could have. Even normal things...like going to college. Choice in music, movies and books. Friends outside of the organization. Joining school teams and clubs.

I see adult JWs slacking off in service and meeting attendance. They put emphasis on relaxation and comfort. Nice homes, nice cars, vacations.

Yet...even though they aren't the same as we were, they are still trapped in a cult and can't see outside the life of being a JW, be it not the same as years ago.

The only reason people stay in the cult is because of family and friends. Hardly anyone is a hardcore believer.

This reminds me of how the WTS is so strong on you not missing meetings just because you're on vacation. It's funny because once my dad and I took a long road trip once; this was when I was a hardcore Dub. Well I was desperately trying to find the Kingdom Hall and dad said..."you know....we just don't HAVE to go the the meeting!" He was pretty aggrevated by me lol!
