I've always struggled with this. I've never been able to fit in anywhere unless I kept my mouth shut and pretended to adopt the opinions of those I associated with. I won't do that any more. It gets lonely at times, but overall I'm much happier this way.

yes there is pressure to conform. It is not so great though as JD alluded to that one must move to an island and be a hermit to be an individual.
I do not obey laws that I feel are unjust or wrong. I do not follow fashion trends, blah blah and et cetera, et cetera. I am still not imprisoned by society. I am not banished from society. Yet any way.

I don't know if I qualify has an "individual" but for me it's not being afraid to be yourself. Yesterday I walk around town in my kilt, now in Scotland I would not be very unique but here in a my very French Canadian little town I got a lot of stares. Wen I feel like wearing something I wear it, wen I feel like saying something, I say it, wen I feel like doing something I do it. Does this make me an individual? Maybe. Am I much happier now that I accept myself has I am? YES!!!
