Declaring JW's a cult to co-workers

I am in a unique work situation which I won't describe because I am a fader.
Let's just say that it's like Vegas. What happens (or is said) at work stays at work.
We are a fairly tight bunch. Some of my closest co-workers know my situation
    with the JW religion.

Recently, some co-workers that don't know the situation (but still honor the
Vegas mentality) outright asked me, "How come you don't go to those Jehovah's
    Witness meetings anymore?"

Without batting an eye, I was able to answer, "I discovered that they were a mind-control
cult, and I managed to break free of their control."

"Wow. What does your wife think?"

"Well, she's still one of them, so we treat it like the 800 pound gorilla in the room."

It's really great to just be able to say what you want. I don't recommend this to everyone,
because many co-workers will blow a fade. But start developing friendships outside the Borg
with people that can be a support to you when the JW friends leave you.

Just my ramblings. Thanks for reading.

I'm really happy for you that you are in this situation. Cultivating friends outside the JWs is so important, and it sounds like you have people you can trust there at work!

The response you get from non-witnesses is amazing! When they find out you no longer want to be a witness they tell you all sorts of things. I even had on co-worker in tears, she was so happy for me.

It cannot be said enough, as there are new posters and new lurkers here all the time, that it is important to make friends with non-JW's as you fade or wait to be DA'd or DF'd. You need a support group when you are shunned by everyone you believed was your friend.

OTWO - I'm so very glad that you came back from your break - I love your posts!

It's great that you can talk freely and openly with your workmates - here's to the time when you can do the same with all your loved ones....

OTWO it really helps having friends that you can trust and talk to about these things. Also its great you can talk to them openly about it as it means that they aren't likely to be tempted to listen next time the jws come to the door so it is benefitting them as well.

And MUM is right, before i sent my d'a letter i made friends with some of the parents at my sons school and did voluntary work there, so that when i did d'a and the jws shunning me in the playground, i had people there that knew my situation and thought it was disgusting but really helped me cope. So if anyone is thinking of leaving for good, it really helps to try and meet some people and make non conditional friends first. It is well worth the effort and i'm as shy as a mouse so if i can do it anyone can!lol

Two of my neighbors who are Christians said they had been praying for me after I told them that I had escaped from the Watchtower Society.

Two of my co-workers shun me and tell others that I am an evil person.

Guess what religion they belong to.

Yes, yes and yes. I enjoy it so much that I probably say it too much. I used to be the crazy jesusfreak, but now I'm the crazy ex-jesusfreak.

When we were going through our exit process I worked in a very close knit office. All of my co-workers were aware of the process I was going through and they were very supportive of what I was doing. I had some really good conversations with one man who was struggling with his relationship with the mormon church.

I think our neighbors cheered when we put up Christmas lights.

Those awful "worldly" people can prove to be really wonderful, given a chance to show it. I think it was the final nail in my relationship with the WTBS. I had discovered that there are a lot of good people outside the JW's.

Great comments by all. Many of you have found support outside in the world.
