I was reading this nonsense at my mom's house yesterday and when I agreed with one of the definitions for "discreet" from the article, I said, "How could anyone think they were ever discreet when they got EVERYTHING wrong from Russell's day until now? Were they discreet when they said because the end is so close you shouldn't get married, have children and make families?? Is that "discreet" or just the opposite???"

My mother's response:"At the District Convention, they mentioned that neither the Governing Body or the Faithful & Discreet Slave is perfect.....so it doesn't matter".

    WTF???

Yeah, they sure used a lot of discretion there. The sense of the word is better understood when you realize that the parable is based on the story of Joseph in the OT. The slave is faithful and "discreet" in the same way Joseph was. Joseph was able to sensibly prepare for the famine with the wisdom he had from God and this allowed him to adminster food to the rest of Egypt during the famine itself, thanks to his foresight. That is what Jesus is comparing the slave to.

You know what gets me?? How people can just excuse and blow something off. No matter what you say that is logical and obvious, it falls on deaf ears. It's like they simply choose to stay stupid and ignorant. I hate that!

    Very good insight!

Leolaia, I've never heard that the FDS is really based on Joseph. Where did you pull that one out of??

I was wondering about the use of the word "discreet" yesterday. Doesn't really seem to fit. But then, I don't have the official JW dictionary.

The greek word translated "discreet" is--fronimos, which apparently means, "located in Brooklyn."

Their arrangement with the U.N. as one of it's NGO's in the 1990's WAS discreet - in the same sense that a mate sneaking off to have sex with a paramour tries to be "discreet".
