If the owner felt duped, he should have changed the menu to offer free ice water, but charge a fee for the lemons.
Also, the customer should have just ordered a lemonade.
Both of them are cheapskates, but the restaurant owner had more to lose by making an issue out of it.
Taking back the tip...now that is an excellent idea.
However, I bet the owner would argue that one, as well.
I was sitting at a bar - as I do - and there were small bowls of cheese squares, crisps and peanuts for customers to nibble with their drinks. Some fat-ass comes in and starts pigging out. The bar tender tells him that it is not a free buffet.
The fat-ass says that he don't see no sign saying how much each customer is allowed. The bar tender tells him that he is there to tell people. The gut tries to argue so I tell him stop being a prat. He looks at all the steel i am wearing and the muscles on my legs and manages to control himself.
The smart thing for the restaurant owner mentioned in this thread, to do, would be offer free lemonade with every meal. But if that is not what he is offering, it is sneaky to take what has not been offered.
People who abuse generosity are being selfish and my verdict is that the greedy lemonade drinker should be fed to the lions or put to the sword for such a horrendous crime.
What is wrong with world nowadays?
Nah, I wouldnt penalize the waitress for the owners foolishness.
By the way heres a good side note. This chinese restaurant I worked for went out of business and the other chinese restaurant bought the property. So you see it pays to treat your customers and employees well.
The other guy was super nice and almost forced you to take a break and eat, didnt even charge us. The other place was so concerned that we werent being charged enough.
By the way, the best chinese food ever is in Paintsville Kentucky at the Mandarin House.
Need some facts sorting out here!
In the UK you can order tap water (ie from the water supply!), or there will be a jug on the table for you to help yourself - for which there is no charge, but they don't usually put a lemon slice with tap water, just ice.
Or you can order mineral/spring water for which there is a charge, and you can ask for lemon with it.
Will this guys water have been free or would he have already paid for it anyway? Or did they 'upgrade' the 'plain water' bill to 'lemonade' (in which case, he may actually have only been charged a few cents for the sweeteners)
If he'd already paid for the water, that's mean to charge him for making lemonade. However if the water was free, I might call him a cheapskate but still wouldn't charge him - bad business sense if it's the usual thing to do there. Plus, how many people get refunds for not using sweeteners?!
"The customer is always right, even when they're wrong" and all that...
In the states resturants do not charge you for tap water, or lemon wedges. A few places will charge for lemon wedges but they list it in the menu pricing. This man was charged for a lemonade because he ordered a tap water with his meal, the water came with lemon wedges, normally the resturant would not charge you for this, however the owner observed that the man squeezed his 2 tiny lemon wedges and added some sweetner that is already on the table along with the other condiments, this caused the owner to charge the man for a lemonade at full price even though the man did not order a fountain drink. That's a problem, imo the only cheep skate here is the resturant owner.
He looks at all the steel i am wearing and the muscles on my legs and manages to control himself.
Hey, Glad,
I sense you are not speaking in metaphor and that your avatar is really your true picture.
So how does that occupation work out nowadays...especially with all the new laws they have?
John Doe:
I've got to side with the restaurant owner here. He has every right to charge for his service. If you don't like that, you have every right not to use his service. The old man is definitely a cheap skate.
Agreed on all counts, with the proviso that the restaurant had an obligation to inform the customer if they were going to charge him. That way he has the choice of whether to make his own "lemonade" and get charged for it, buy real lemonade at the same price or tell the restaurant owner to go f%*& himself.
Most restaurateurs would realise that the price of a slice of lemon is not worth alienating customers. I mean, the old man might call what he drinks "lemonade" but surely, the people working in the restaurant would have seen it was just tap water with artificial sweetener and should have pitied him rather than trying to gouge him. If he had stuck a free candle into a free bread roll, would they have charged him for a birthday cake?
Nah, I wouldnt penalize the waitress for the owners foolishness.
In a joint like that, I bet the waitress doesn't get to keep the tips anyway.
JG,
Is it just me or are Asian resturant owners pricks?
I have seen them talking down to employees and nit picking.
A few years ago a blind woman went to a local chineese buffet and of course she took her service dog, the owner had a fit and kicked the blind woman and her dog out of the resturant, this outraged the diners and the incident made it on the local news and ACLU threatend to sue the owner.
