Some of you may have overlooked a modest post a few days ago that I strongly suggest you now pay very close attention to. Please do read it carefully, especially in light of other recent troubling activities in the UK. The British have not taken too kindly to the idea that untaxed monies ostensibly for charity from the UK are being shipped to the Watch Tower Society in the U.S., yet there is a loophole ...
The Society is attempting to do something that could be construed by some as worldwide money laundering so as to get around the principle of rendering to Caesar what is rightfully Caesar's in each country globally. (Or perhaps we are about to receive "new light" on the identity of the "higher powers." Maybe the GB?)
Under the guise of Kingdom Hall Funds some very creative money funneling could take place if the scheme is unchallenged.
The following small announcement appeared in The Times in the UK, Friday July 28, 2000:
"PUBLIC NOTICES
"CHARITY: The Society Kingdom Hall Fund administered in connection with the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Britain (1077961) REFERENCE: HB 150055-CS(Ldn)
"The Charity Commission proposes to make a Scheme to enable the fund to be used WORLD WIDE. [caps mine] A copy of the draft Scheme can be seen at the registered office of Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Britain, IBSA House, The Ridgeway, London NW7 1RN for a period of 21 days commencing July 31, 2000.
"Or it can be obtained by sending a stamped addressed envelope to the Charity Commission, Harmsworth House, 13-15 Bouverie Street, London, EC4Y 8DP quoting the above reference. Comments or representations can be made within one month from today."
James King, columnist for The Guardian newspaper of Great Britain, advises me of the following and asks that I pass it along to you:
Scheme is the operative word in more than one way. "The Watch Tower Society is in reality 'scheming' to take advantage of lax British tax loopholes to facilitate movement of Watchtower funds round the globe.
"Should this 'scheme' win approval the London branch of the Watch Tower will in effect become an unopposed channel for the distribution of cash to any legal representative of the Watchtower anywhere in the world. The recent crackdown on cults in France which has led to tighter controls being called for in a growing number of European countries has resulted in this latest move by the Society.
"Opposition to the removal of charitable status of the Watch Tower Society in democratic countries such as France will in future be financed by CASH from the world headquarters of the Society which will be filtered through London." (Here in the United States we have less delicate words for this kind of thing.)
Please note: "There is an ongoing review of the situation regarding a unified approach to the charitable status of cults throughout the European Community." (More about this later.)
How do you feel about this? You may make your feelings known and state your reasons why. Says King:
"Representation [your viewpoints or challenge] regarding the 'propriety or validity' of the intended 'scheme' should be made immediately to the Charity Commission. Any doubts or opinions about the advisability of British involvement or interference in democratic procedures in other EU countries which choose to categorize Jehovah's Witnesses as non-charitable should be directed to the
European Parliament."
"A recent article by James King in the Guardian newspaper (15, July, 2000) clearly stated that the Watch Tower Society was not charitable and that it had misled the government in Bulgaria as well as the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg."
Has this report in a major newspaper been challenged? "To date no objections or representations on behalf of the Watch Tower Society have been made to the author or Guardian Newspapers." That is, no one has challenged these printed statements.
