Awesome! had a good lawyer or did she agree with this?

Really, a combination of both. The attorney I used (female) had dealt with witness divorces in the past, and was awesome. In addition to the shared physical and legal custody - she also agreed in writing in the divorce settlement to allow the kids to have blood transfusions anytime that a medical professional or physician recommended it.

Just curious, did the Watchtower's lawyers get involved in the divorce on her behalf?

No, they didn't get involved - for a couple of reasons... Deep down she knows that I am a great dad, albeit and apostate dad... Also, before I was thrown out I made sure that I empowered my kids to speak up for themselves, and they were able to wreak havoc on their own, refusing to go to meetings, wanting to spend all of their time with me, resisting time spent with her JW friends. etc... They also embraced the birthday parties, holidays, and other things that they were exposed to when they were with me - much to the dismay of their mother. She knew that she was sort of losing touch with them early on because the visitation schedule (during the "temporary orders" while our attorneys were pouring through 18K bucks of our money) was that I had them every Mon night, Wed night, and every other Friday night as well as all afternoon on Saturday. They were being dragged to meetings on Tues, Thurs, and on Sundays when I didn't have them - so in their little minds all they knew was that being with mom means being still at the meetings, being with dad means fun and being a kid.

She also didn't want to mess with me because I told her that I had talked to Bill Bowen a few times, that I had the child custody packet from jwchildcustody.com, and that I would go 10 rounds at trial with her about holidays, school sports, college education, blood transfusions, the disfellowshipping practice, etc - she got a lot more reasonable when she saw tough times coming at trial.

Well Billzfan, I've definitely got mixed emotions over this news. I'm happy for you that things have turned out as well as they have and that you're moving forward in a positive manner.

I'm sad that something as painful as divorce, no matter how amicably settled, has been caused by this religion. There used to be a lady in our town who would stand on the street corner every now and then with a sign saying "JWs Break Apart Families". All us dubs, myself included, thought she was nuts. (Well, to be honest, I think she was a little emotionally unstable, but that's another issue.) Regardless of the state of her mental health, we all automatically assumed there was ZERO SUBSTANCE to the claim made on her sign. I hang my head in shame looking back on it now. How could we not see it? (I already know the answer, but it still bugs the hell out of me.)

Anyway, I'm sorry this had to happen, but I'm glad you're making the best of it. All the best.

Sorry about your divorce, but very glad for your kids' sakes that things worked out the very best for them. You did good!

I echo MadTiger in that "That lawyer was worth every penny."

So which is harder, be honest, getting divorced or being a Bills fan these days?

Congratulations! Sorry it didn't work out, but I am glad you feel good instead of bad- divorces are nasty as hell and bring out the worst in everybody.

I'm glad you are happy about it and that your kids are going to have some semblance of a normal childhood. How's Jim Leonhard working out at safety with the Bills? He grew up in my neck of the woods and caused quite a stir with his athletic prowess in high school and then college at the University of Wisconsin.
