    Summer said:

I bet pizza never tasted so good than tonight...

I was thinking the same thing, as summer. This is great news!! With autism, every little achievement is wonderful. But this seems like a huge leap!! Awesome

My daughter is 16 and my step grandchild is 9 yrs old now. We found out last year, that he has a form of Asperger's Syndrome. Related to Autism. Boy, once I read up on it, it explained so much. I knew that boys and girls, weren't that different.

He was such a problem child. He is our only grandchild. My husband and I would just look at each other, when he would hit, fight, scream, and just act totally weird, at just the slightest thing. My step-daughter, even suggested to us, when he was younger, that other grandparents, babysat. What about us taking him at least a weekend a month?

It was almost like we ran for the hills!!! There is no way, I could have taken care of that child for 30 minutes!!! My husband just thought, that she wasn't disciplining him enough. He and I both thought, that WE could straighten him up, in about 30 minutes, if he were ours.

We found out, last year, that he has a form of Asperger's. Now that we know, what is wrong, he is a cool kid. We know what his triggers are, and how to keep him calm. What to do, when we see his mood start climbing. (it can get out of hand)

Understanding what is wrong now, we are bonding more and more with him. Now he is actually fun to be around.

    mrsJones,

My son David also has autistic tendencies and started to speak around the age of 4.He was obsessed with light and could stare into a lightsource for hours(of course we´d stop him) He would sit and just turn the wheels of his toy cars-on and on and on.He spoke his very fist words when he saw a train-he was so fascinated that he shouted: Train! Lights! After that he slowly started to say more and more.

He was born with a heartproblem and was operated 4 times before the age of 6 -so life was tough for the little fighter.

He´s in his 20 s now, the most friendly loving young man I know-he still preferes to go to his room when we have guests because he likes his peace and he needs things to be done the same way all the time otherwise he gets nervous, but all in all he has a very good life.He still loves cars and has books about cars,a big collection of small cars and he also draws them all the time.He never draws living things like people, animals or flowers, just cars.

I love my all my boys very much and am proud of them, but David has a very special place in my heart, probably because he needs me the most.

Funny thing is that he seems to think that it´s him taking care of me.

Last week I was down with the flue and he brought me a cup of tea and told me:Don´t worry about a thing mom, you have me to take care of you. (this mom got a tear in her eye)

I hope your little boy brings you just as much joy as David every day gives to my family and me.

So fantastic to hear that he spoke a complete sentence,it makes you happy, grateful and strong, doesn´t it?

I remember how it was when David was little and I´m so happy for you that you can see progress-tell us when there is more good news about him.

A friend of ours has a daughter that is autistic (among some other things). Sometimes she goes days without acknowledging the outside world. But, when she's good and ready, she can repeat everything said or done within the last week like she was a tape recorder. I call her "The Answering Machine" because it's like her brain only checks it's messages a couple of times a week. We know that she hears and understands, but she only responds when she's ready. It always makes you feel good when they let you know that they're in there somewhere.

    Josie,

That is wonderful news! Keep working with him, from what my friend tells me reinforcement of things already learned and consistancy is the key!
