How about mavericks?
Maverick:
1 Someone who exhibits great independence in thought and action.
2 An unbranded range animal (especially a stray calf); belongs to the first person who puts a brand on it...
Well the first definition anyway...

A frondeur is apparently someone who belonged to the Fronde, an opposition party during a French civil war. Its purpose was not revolution, but "to protect the ancient 'liberties' from encroachments by the royal power."
More than you ever wanted to know about the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fronde

well "goat" is short and to the point and in your face. I like Maverick, too. Hortensia the Heretic sounds good, I may start signing things that way. Apostate is just so overused. And I found out what a frondeur is/was. Some French peasant revolution, where the peasants started throwing things. Frondeur is the person doing the flinging - it means rebel. Heretic is more subtle, I think, and depends on thought and belief.

thanks, gently feral. I was typing my post at the same time you were typing yours, I guess. Yours is a better definition. I didn't think of Wickipedia.

For me, "apostate" is just fine. I do not like the religion one bit, and I have in fact turned against it. Just because I do not picket a$$emblies or put out a book doesn't make me any less against the Witless religion. Rather, I will take advantage of the new technology and stay an apostate.
